FMIC Bumper Cutting,..extremely,..

So, Ive been pondering on this for a long time and still cant fathom spending $1700 for a JDM bumper unpainted for my OBP car...Also, we have a body repairman friend and said that he can get a new oem front cover and paint it for $560 (quoted me yesterday), so if I screw up, I'll buy a new one from hime...

So I got a WBR FMIC and the opening is small,...the lower part of the bumper and corners hit the tow hook too,...and even when I put painter tape to mask the outline, I stood and tried to visualize the cutout for what seemed like hours (lunch break, back to car, changed outline, visualize so more)..

So after an hour or so to come up with a plan (I got Blinder M20) I got to cutting,..

Im going out to run an errand and come back with pictures,...

sorry for the tease,..

Here you go...

The cuts are rough and I may spend some more time rounding the edges with my dremel or something else...I could use the opinion of any "body shop" people as to how I can smooth the edges out or do something with the Center "V" cut on the bottom...

I thought about that long and hard,..but it doesnt follow the lines of the original opening. Also, having it squared off with the endtank is useless since its only the core plates that get cooled off by air..

Im going to get back to it tomorrow as the passanger side needs to be squared off at the top line,..and the driver side near the foglight needs cleaning up too...

i wasn't thinking practical for cooling, just in terms of lines flow ;)

maybe fill the endtank space up to the fin section in (bondo?) to be more vertical?

only thing making me think more vert on both ends would look a bit cleaner for such a tall cut is when i cover that little portion with my finger on my screen -- see? :) -- i think maybe seeing so much core and endtank is throwing off my eye. maybe the original angled lines on the ends meant to better complement the original short cut.

hope you recieve my opinions with utmost respect for your work, and best luck with the outcome :)

I understand what you are saying...I was going to go with the Square cut after looking at pictures of some R32s and R34 modified skylines at Tsukuba,...But after looking at several Painter tape outlines, I decided to go EVO-ish on the outline...You're right that having the endtank exposed isnt necessary, but they were still rubbing against the bumper too and why I cut it,..

Im going to do some sanding now to finish it off, but Im happy with it,...

Its growing on me,.and the butt dyno says that its feels like a different animal...at least it is purposeful getting more air surface now,..

I edited the license plate off for everyone to see the cut...this is before I took some sandpaper to the edges this morn and pics were taken Saturday...
