first day + roadtrip = bluetape madness, LGT style (56k no go.)

Recommended Posts

Before I conk out, I will post this so someone at work on monday (monday sucks) can have a laugh or two. Props to the originals, the s4 guys on vwvortex, we are not claiming this to be completely original but more of an evolution of their handiwork. (but to be honest i bluetaped/seran wrapped my celica waay back in the day)

Lots of pics. work safe.

Setting: Me and my cousin, in San Diego. Car is in fremont, about 8 hours away. Filled out paperwork for title transfer (car was financed) and waited 2 excruciating weeks, but today, sunday, we wake up at 4:50am, get a ride to airport for a 7:10 flight. Arrive at 8:30

Get the car, drive to my cousin's place. Play around with her kids for awhile and then get down to business.

Since LGT is all about stages and whatnot. Here is what I'd describe a stage 2 bluetaping.

We saw a few blue tapers with no pizzazz. they just wanted to protect their front from rock chips. honorable but boring.

Stage1= bluetape.

We had extra time.

Stage2= bluetape + sharpies + online image processor + general lack of sleep.

So without further ado, here we go.

Thats what the front looked like when it was done. Standard leading edge blue tape design. Most of the surfaces that would come into contact with bugs and rock chips are safely covered.

Here is the picture of pedals up close.

More on the TRD thing later.

First car with a functional hoodscoop so we had to do something about it..

It's a frog hanging on for dear life as my toyota powered V6 accelerates beyond limits of webbed feet adhesion.....

More TRD references. why you ask? O because..

stealth mode. The thing i loved most about the aesthetics of the car was that it looked like a camry. ultimate sleeper. mislabeled badging = ultimater ultimate sleeper.

In san diego, I've seen 1 or two legacies. I figure people dont like change so maybe this would help me fit in with the soccer mom crowd. The few we saw weren't very impressed. Maybe they would have been if they looked closer and saw we were environmentally conscious dudes. (Synergy drive ftw!).

Also couldnt decide on a trim for the camry so we listed them all.

So far so good. (no functional reason for blue tape behind the car, in case you're wondering)

We were bored on the plane so we had a head start. Crowd favorite: the roflcopter (we couldnt remember what the old one looked like so we improvised)

(This wasnt securely fastened so the roflcopter is floating around somewhere near fremont as it took off from teh car on the freeway)

And since we're environmentally conscious kids we wanted to educate people how gas was made. (note we only get 91 octane in CA) How correct we were to actual facts was not important.

i should have entered a science contest.

(yes i used to play WoW)

scene 3: (organic chemistry is finally useful)

Like i said facts were not verified. dont get mad at me if you use this information on your chemistry test and fail.

After about 40 minutes we could see that our car was still lacking pizzazz. Anybody could bluetape their car and draw all over it. and then internetspeak all of it. big deal right? Something was missing.

We looked at each other and said... this car needs some Jack Bauer.

We decided since we were driving a soccer mom car a gun would be totally unappropriate. So now he's Jack Flauer. The other dude is my cousin. Dont know what prompted him to do that but I'm not one to stifle creativity. Credit to http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/ for image blowing up.

Dont worry I didnt forget about you guys either.

(My favorite smiley. only because it makes no sense at all and i'll bet there was drinking involved in the creation of that smiley)

Took about 7 hours total, following traffic. Nothing too crazy as the legacy has more horsepower than both of my previous 2 cars combined. it was an uneventful drive besides the kids staring and pointing at the car. Late night trip to in n out and we were home.

Here she is, all tucked away.

So far so good, cept for intermittent rough idling and the fan never going away ('05 recall). What was amazing was that you could stay in one gear over the entire grapevine on the 5 freeway (north of 6-flags magic mountain).

I was hunting for gears for the entire 20 or so minutes in my miata. Amazing how it pulls in every gear... it was also pretty damn stable. 85 mph felt like 65 in the miata.

And with that I'm out. Thanks for all your guys' help in the newbie/prepurchase forums...

And I'll be seeing you SoCal guys around.

cheers.

Nice. You should've stopped @ Buttonwillow on the way back. You were certainly taped up for a track day.

Are you going to put a Clear Bra on it & that's why you taped it all up?

 That's awesome! Hopefully the sharpie ink didn't go through the tape...

i tested it earlier. every day i'd draw over the same line on a piece of tape and it never bled through..

Actually the front end wasn't in the greatest condition. 2.5 years of rock chips and stuff... this was so i didnt get any more major ones.

my friend made this trip (but going from socal to norcal instead) and he got a giant rock chip on his hood and a few on his front bumper on his 2 week old EVO. needless to say he was not a happy camper.

Shoot, I got a handful of nasty rock chips on the hood of the new spec. B within a week of purchase. Stinking landscape truck with trailer cut me off on an open highway at 5 AM, dropping a dozen or so golfball-sized rocks. I'm still bitter. I'm not sure tape would have stopped the damage, though.
Ich bin echt viel netter, wenn ich nuechtern bin. Echt!
