Escort Radar Detector Remote Flush Mount 5MT

Recommended Posts

I got this from Leg-GT Chris.

What we are doing is flush mounting the remote mute Smart Cord for an Escort Radar Detector on the trim around the shifter. This is for advanced users only because a screw up is pretty expensive. ($230 for a new trim piece) Becasue I am writing for advanced users, I am not going to explain how to do certain things that an advanced user should already know...

1. Remove the trim piece (advances users should know how to do this)

1.5. remove shifter boot from shifter trim

2. Prep the trim piece by covering the entire thing with electrical tape to prevent scratching. Leave the space we are going to be working with open.

3. Take apart the smart cord.

4. Gently apply the sticker to the top of the trim, centered from side to side, and just above center from top to bottom of the bottom of the trim piece. Trace the one hole and the whole sticker with a pencil. Remove sticker and put it somewhere where it will remain sticky. See first Pic

5. Drill out the 3 holes. see first pic

6. Now you need to shave off part of the top of the smart cord housing so that the button and lights sit up in the holes in the trim. We will be using the side of the housing with the cutout in it for the cord. This side also has the peg for the screw that holds the houseing together. see pic 2 and 3

7. now we need to attach the smart cord housing to the trim piece. There is a little lip on the front we will drill into. see pic 4

8. set the housing up against the holes and see if they match up. I had to use a little piece of something as a spacer to push the housing away from that lip so that the holes would line up when i attached the housing to the lip. Use glue or a screw, what ever you're more comfortable with. I used a screw. see pic 5

9. Now we need to trim a piece on the shifter boot aurround that is supposed to poke through the lip on the trim. see the lip in pic 6 trim it so it does't hit the smard cord housing when installed.

10. install guts back into smartcord housing. use the screw to keep the PC board in the housing...I didn't use the other side of the housing. Cover the PC board with electrical tape to protect it. see pic 7

11. figure out where you want to grab power from and where you want to mount your detector. Run wires and attach power. (advanced users should know how to do this)

12. put it all back together. apply sticker. all done. see last two pics

Forgot to add that I am going to try and do this on my dad's LL Beanie. I dunno what I have to work with on the 5EAT though.

Homelink, i assume you mean the rearview version. Why put them right there if the detector itself is only mounted a few inches away. The idea of the button is so you don;t have to move your hand far to mute it.

I hate to hijack the thread but I have a question for you. I have a Cobra radar detector that is mounted right next to the rearview mirror and the power cord hangs down in front of the radio and is plugged into the cigarette lighter/power supply. How can I re-wire it so it's not plugged into that outlet and the cord doesn't hang down like that?

Contact Cobra and see if they have any hardwire kits. I doubt they do since they are the kmart brand detector. But if they do, you can use that to tap power from either the rearview mirror, dome lights above rearview, or run wires downt he A pillar and find power somewhere else.

Wow, that was hard! I found it the most difficult to measure the distance between the holes, and to actually mount the remote underneath the trim. I didn't understand how you used a screw to hold it in place - was it a screw going through the same hole used in the remote itself? Did it go through the boot trim?

I ended up using krazy glue, and it seems like it will hold steady (I used a lot). Other than that, it works perfectly, although the label might be a little crooked (like 1 degree off - but I'm a perfectionist, I guess). I'll try to straighten it out tomorrow.

Anyway, thanks for the walk through - it was very helpful. It is a good location - much better than trying to mount that remote on the dashboard, or next to the center console, etc.

WOW... quite the walkthrough. I'll have to show a buddy this one, then he can do it on my car!!! Hate to say it, but I don't fall under the "advanced user" title just quite yet. That's what tech friends are for.

There's times when there's a false going off and you know it's false, so you hit mute. When you mute these detectors, it's only for that alert. It'll come back when it detects the next signal.

Like when you are stuck in construction traffic and a for 30 min a construction sign is setting off your detector....that's a good time to mute it.

Or when you are in the city, it goes off left and right. If you know you aren't speeding...you can mute it.

I have an older Passport that I tried hardwiring through the autodimmer/compass mirror this weekend. Couldn't get it to work, even though the connections looked right.

I took a phone cord and threaded it through the headliner, stipped the green and red wires. I attached a fuse to the red wire and attached it to the blue wire in the headliner using wire tap-ins from RadioShack. I attached the green phone wire to the green wire in the headliner.

Anyone know where I went wrong? Thanks for any advise.

Brother !S4 -

Be careful!

While it's true that it will mute the current alert and re-activate full sound-alert on the next incoming event, if you turn on the pro-meter, you can sometimes see that even though you've muted the current alert based on, say, a K-band false/signal, an ADDITIONAL/subsequent incoming signal, particularly one that is temporally close to the original as well as on the same band, can sometimes sneak in!

If an enforcer is truly dedicated to his craft, this is a great way to foil the X50.....

I'm going to have to start using the pro meter to see what's going on instead of just the threat meter.

Btw, I'm loving this detector. I was getting signals from a cop on the top of a hill (stopped for a break down but left his radar on) from almost 5 miles away last night!

I know that if I mute my X50 while the K band is going off and I get a signal on Ka, it will definitely re-engage the audio alert. I am not sure if a different frequency of K is detected if it will re-engage the audio...

it will. mute is key and i want to tackle this install soon.

btw - nice corgi. do u have one? i have 2

Radar detectors don't work anymore. Li-dar cannot be detected. A cop friend of mine told me that by the time radar detectors work, the speeder is already caught and clocked on the radar.

But this mod is very well done and clean!
