Max Capacity
This is a interference fit engine. If you trust the ebay crap go ahead. There are vendors on this site that offer quality items for a fair price. I used Dayco belts and parts from Advance Auto when I did my timing belt and stuff at 95,000 miles on my 05. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. It is a labor intesive job, get it done the right way the first time. "Remember Danny - Two wrongs don't make a right but three rights make a left." alegend90
OP, i am shopping for timing belt stuff too.. heres a link to the complete kit for $345: http://www.fredbeansparts.com/index.php/gates-racing-complete-timing-kit.html while you're at it, may as well do the water pump which is relatively inexpensive: http://www.fredbeansparts.com/index.php/gates-racing-water-pump.html check out the other vendors too, as they may have other deal going. i checked this kit out due to the amount of referrals fred beans parts gets on this site. PearlBlueGT
You have to research a bit before buying anything off of ebay. I needed wheel bearing. Got a Timken off of ebay for $80, same part at local parts store is $135+tax. The link you posted says Gates kit, Gates is pretty good brand and I trust it. AZP Installs
Ebay junk like that is not worth the money. You may save a little buying that but will have to spend thousands to repair your motor if the belt snaps. The Gates kits are nice but we would recommend using a Subaru water pump gasket and not the Gates paper one. Not as cheap but you get what you pay for. Looking at the add, it is a Gates kit but I would make sure you get what you paid for. Gates comes in a box with everything wrapped and it clearly marked. So just be cautious. -Jake http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg Call directly for your best Whiteline Price! | We also carry almost every manufacturer now, so before you buy parts call us. jazzymt
FWIW - I just did the gates kit with water pump + gates v-belts. I would highly recommend - very nice looking belt - all installed w/o issue & I have the piece of mind of a kevlar-reinforced belt keeping my interference engine from eating itself alive. RCrown2
Thanks for the great replies, everyone. Sorry, it was late when I posted, but I have researched a little and am aware that Gates is a fairly good brand. With that said, I would like to support this forum community and go through a vendor. AZPinstalls - do you offer kits with timing belt as well as water pump and drive belts? I am at 107k now and nothing shows on Carfax that the service was done, so it's good to just play it safe and do it myself. Any other recommendations for this maintenance? king_j
Use a gates kit. I would not use eBay parts for moving engine parts.
mwiener2
Just because half the people here have said "use a gates kit" means that they didn't even click the link. The ebay sale is for a Gates kit. If it's actually a gates kit, you're fine. 1454
I bought one of my gates kits off ebay, and one from a local place. (lgt and fxt both needed timing jobs done) and it was the same kit only 100 bucks cheaper. Just my .

The ebay sale is for a Gates kit. If it's actually a gates kit, you're fine. I see that is a gates kit in the ebay ad. I would verify the part number before I'd consider that one. But I still think I'd rather buy from someone one here. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. tbperry
I am looking around for the same thing right now, found this but it doesn't come with a water pump, which I have found one for $65. good deal all together? $232 $65 ------- $300 ish or so? Plus I get 5% cash back on my card if I buy it thru amazon... I am thinking this is the best route... Mega Users seabass07 Posted February 4, 2012 Mega Users Share Posted February 4, 2012 Once again, that ebay link is the complete gates timing kit that includes all idlers and water pump. Saying to avoid it is like saying don't buy your gates brand timing belt kit from autozone, your engine is at stake. It's a reputable ebay vendor with an asston of positive feedback and a known good kit. It's not some unknown shit from china. Just go for it. For $250 and free shipping, no reason not to. I agree with supporting the vendors here, but when you are on a budget, you do what you gotta do.
