Our 3.0R has 65,000 miles on it and runs like a train, including duty towing a 3,000 lb trailer and a number of autocross events along with commuting and trips. There are many early 3.0R's logging way over 100,000 miles with zero problems. I sold my 97 4cyl. with 165,000 to a relative who kept it until 189,000 and was still running well. I sure wish they would release the SpecB 3.0R in the US.

By contrast, my WRX got a new engine at 150 miles (a problem with a small percentage of 8/8 build WRX's), and I just got this email from a former co-worker: his car had 97,000 miles on it.

"... Take care of that turbo... mine blew and took the engine with it....supposedly the legacy gt is NOT a reliable long term car.... start looking to get rid of it." Details to follow.

So, when should you dump a 2.5T? 80,000? They don't seem to have quite the resale value of the 6 cylinder, but do they take a big dive after a lot of miles? My WRX only has 5,400 so it's not a big worry for a couple of years.

If you read this forum long enough the engines seem to last about 1,000 miles.

You should dump the engine when it blows up

With the current state of the auto industry and the resale value of subaru's in general, I would put 80K on the bish no prob and then call victory auto wreckers.

I dumped mine at about 58K, just before the timing belts, plugs, and a host of other crap had to be replaced. As it is the car was not the most reliable up to that point anyway. Good riddance.

No, I spend too much time worrying about the engine in my Legacy to spend sufficient time studying my English as a Second Language coursework

In all seriousness, I have 80K on my 05 LGT over the last 4+ years and until just recently (when my car was hit on a side street in Southie) I only needed to replace wheel bearings... Since my car was off the road and in the shop I decided to get the clutch replaced (I could have gone a while longer, but slippage in 5th gear on cold nights was getting more and more noticeable)... I got the clutch replaced and also did UP/DP combo... exactly one week later, with no hard driving due to the clutch break-in, my turbo decided it had enough of this cruel world... SO now I'm waiting to get a VF46 installed (I would have gone for the VF52 from your WRX, but one wasn't readily available)... Once it is in, I'm going to change the oil/filter to hopefully rid any of the lose metal from the compressor wheel out of my engine... run another 1000 miles and change the oil again... and see where I stand! If the car has any other issues at that point, then I will weigh and consider my options...

Fortunately, I don't get into the turbo powertrain forums that often so I don't know that I should be worried about things...

You dumped it just 47k miles before the timing belt (one, by the way).

Certainly seems like "a lot" of turbos are going bad but at the same time there's a thread around here somewhere with people who have well over 100K on the stock turbo/motor. I think you're putting too much weight on the few failures vs. the many (more) that don't fail.
