Recommended Posts

A) your transmission

B) your front and rear diff.

Right now my car only ahs about 7000km's on it, but by next summer will have about 30000+ km's. i will want to change the diff+ tranny fluid to something a little better, like Elf, amzoil, royal purple or redline.

has anybody had good/bad experiences qith these products?

myself i have always used elf synthetic in my engines and Redline for the tranny gear oil.

thoughs...

Red Line synthetic in both. So far so good.

There was a long thread I found a while ago when I researched this that has a lot of back anf forth volleying.

any idea what the thread was named, i searched with no luck.

in the VW world, i know that elf and Redline are king.

in the domestics, royal purple seems to be popular aswell as amzoil.

How does the Redline work in the winter? I used it in my old GTI several years ago, and it made the trans. difficult to shift for the first 5-10 minutes of driving. Once warmed up, it was smooth. In the summer, it was like butter, though. For that application, the OEM (also synth) fluid was best for everyday conditions.

when i used the Redline MTL in my mk4, it was fine in the winter, better then the stock oil was. i have previously used the 80-90 form them and it was as you said harder to shift in the winter.

I use Specialty Formulations MTL-R for the transaxle, and HDS-5 for the rear diff. It is a boutique specialty oil manufacturer that does not compromise on performance for the sake of profit. Phil(Owner) uses nothing but the best base oils and the best additive packs to arguably combine into one of the best oils out there bar none!

Specialty Formulations looks very promising.

Since I own a 5EAT, would the HDS-5 work in the center diff (NOT the transmission)?

Works in both front & rear diff's on 5EAT! He can also make up the specific transmission fluid for the tranny as well. Just drop them a note....

I'm a Mobil 1 believer myself.

75-90 synthetic in everything. Trans shifts much smoother once warmed up

Except I spilled some behind the turbo heatshield, and it ran down the DP.

Four weeks and I can still smell it after a highway run.
