stoggy
I did some searching and couldn't find any threads specifically for detailed engine bays. Seeing as how summer is coming..well here in Canada anyways..that means that car shows are coming to and what better way to represent then with a sparkling clean engine bay?! Let's see your pics! Here are a few of mine:
GTTuner
Do not use products containing silicone! Silicone kills oxygen sensors.
stoggy
Silicone can also leave permanent residue on any painted surface if exposed for long enough. Same with plastic depending on the composition. I use mostly and interior detailing solution...Mothers Protectant works really well and it conditions the rubber and plastic hoses. Do not use tire dressings to add shine, it will only deteriorate rubbers and plastics from the heat of the engine.

My process is a fairly well documented one that you can find somewhere on this forum, so I'm not sure what terms you were using. "engine detailing" should bring up several. I also have it on my blog in my signature and on the OCDetails.com site. Just a little elbow grease and the right technique is all you need. Engines are my favorite thing to detail. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . stoggy
Amazing! I agree, the engine is the most rewarding. Anybody can detail the outside but a nice clean engine takes some skill and patience. It's nothing for me to spend a good 3-4 hours detailing the engines on my two rides. Also, a clean engine is way easier to work on! Keep em coming! Show off that crispy engine of your subies! OCDetails
I'm going to have to start charging you royalties for using my car I'm going to have to recalculate what I charged you to do it then. oh, wait... I think I did that for free. I found a new product I tried recently. It is a Gunk engine shine. It was buy one get one free at Autozone last week if you bought the heavy duty gel cleaner, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Yeah... that sucker is going straight to the 'disgraced product shelf'. I have no use for something that doesn't even make the hoses shine. I'll be sticking with CD2 for the same price. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . OCDetails
Are these covers from the JDM Legacies? Yup. I can't remember where I got those at. It was a vendor on here back in '05 sometime. I don't know why they still don't come with those... It just seems logical to cover those things up to me. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . Drift Motion
I see...thanks guys I remember, on my other car I just covered up the distributor and spray the engine foam/cleaner thing and let it eat away all the grime and etc, and sprayed it down I assume similar procedure can be done to the LGT? OCDetails
Essentially. http://ocdetails.blogspot.com/2008/09/engine-detailing.html That link may help out a bit. It actually has the areas of the LGT you want to be careful with highlighted. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . Drift Motion
thanks for the link last time I used the Gunk stuff as well! Works very well on a 20 year old engine with slow oil leaks...
shadowsports
OCDetails... Great blog! I have been using Foamy Engine Brite for years. I haven't seen CD2 but am going to look for it. Have a question... Many of my small rubber hoses have a buildup which looks whitish and powdery. I'm sure this is from using silicone based detailing products on the hoses previously, like ArmorAll. What s the best way to get this off before applying CD2?
OCDetails
You mean like this: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/OCDetails/DSC05304.jpg I actually did that damage on purpose so I could document how to clean it up. It happens all the time when people just use the wrong products under the hood. Most often it comes from using all purpose degreaser on the hoses and not rinsing it off properly from my experience. This particular example comes from using an APC and tire shine. You can see the brown crud all built up on the larger hose on the left. Nasty stuff. The good news is that it isn't too tough to clean up. In fact, if scrub it with a toothbrush and soapy water and then use the CD2 product, it will come right out. Sometimes it takes a couple applications, but it comes out easy enough. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/OCDetails/DSC05306.jpg _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S . shadowsports
Mine are more powdery than that. Well the coolant overflow line is solid white chalky, If a soapy toothbrush is all I need, then great!
OCDetails
Don't forget the elbow grease. It is amazing what a little soapy water can clean up though. This might be one of those areas you want to use dish soap for. Something nice and strong like Dawn. Find one without any additional moisturizers and fru fru smells in it. Standard blue Dawn works the best. _________________________________________ “Cleanliness becomes more important as godliness becomes more unlikely.” O C D E T A I L S .
