DOHCEJ22E1
I have finally started to dismantle the engine starting with the intake manifold. DOHCEJ22E1
How did you throw a rod? Well, remember when I told you that the engine started knocking heavy & pretty much died? Well, I started it up again & drove it 15mi back to my house, saving myself a very expensive tow trip. During that drive, this was the result. The engine was toast to begin with so I thought "Why not?"

DOHCEJ22E1
Ha! I've never removed the heads to an EJ in the engine bay. I'm going to start tomorrow once I remove the exhaust. They seem tricky to get to but I think I can do it.
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted October 21, 2011 I Donated Share Posted October 21, 2011 Good luck with that. The only way you can take the heads off with it still in the engine bay is if you disconnect the motor mounts and floorjack the oil pan as high as it will go. The reason is because the head bolts are too long and won't clear the frame in order toremove the heads -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." ricky santana
^ what he said. Make sure to use a heavy duty jack and have the front end on stands. When you loosen the headbolts you won't be able to pull them all the way out but they'll be out far enough to pull and wiggle the heads straight up and out. SpecBamf41
why are you not pulling the motor? you have to replace that short block anyway. if you need a crank, rod or piston i have a full set from my motor. BNR18g on 93oct
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted October 25, 2011 I Donated Share Posted October 25, 2011 pull and wiggle the heads straight up and out. almost straight up and out. There should be dowel pins about 1/4 inch long that the head its on that you will have to clear before you pull the head up. BE CAREFUL when you pull the heads out....careful not to scratch their surface on anything or you may have internal coolant / oil leaking issues when you put it back together -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." DOHCEJ22E1
Got one head off. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00103.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00106.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00108.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00113.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00112.jpg Going to start on the other after I eat. Cam seals were in great shape & I'll examine the cams later. Most time consuming when one does not have any power tools. Tricky part turned out to be the dowel pin that Brok mentioned. The head did not want to dislodge from it so I had to tap it a couple of times & wiggle it out. I'm going to examine the heads tonight because they are DEFINITELY very different from the 96 heads & since I did not have a chance to do that before, I'll take my time with them. DOHCEJ22E1
I started at 9:30 this morning & just finished about 15 mins ago. Subtract 2 hours for break & that's how long it took me to get the heads off. I've never taken heads to an EJ off while it was in the car. It's not as bad as I thought it would be but it's done! Right side head removed. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00117.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00119.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00127.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00129.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00130.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w40/Kenshin1984/Destruction%20of%20Engine/IMG-20111025-00128.jpg I could have been a little more intricate with pics but I wasn't really thinking about that. I was "in the zone". If there are any questions, I will answer them.

SSpeed
I'm sure you know, but each of those little pucks on the lifters are potentially different thicknesses so if they fell off when removing the heads hopefully they got back to their exact spot... A good shop should take care of that for you when they refresh the heads, but I'd ask..

The bolts were also kept in their exact location (just to make myself feel a little better).

SSpeed
Yep, they're shimmed... each lifter has a puck on it that could potentially be a different thickness and they fall off pretty easily when you remove the cams, which you have to do in order to pull the heads. DOHCEJ22E1
When I was taking the cams off, the shims seemed like they were on pretty good but started to loosen up & almost came out once the oil settled. There will be work & pics up once the rain stops. I haven't started examining the heads yet due to being ill but I'll be hanging around & conversing to learn more. I'll be putting the heads back together as soon as I clean the parts & get them ready for machining.

DOHCEJ22E1
Okay, the fight for funds & repair has begun. My sister has given me the keys & title to her 96 Camry, which has a seized engine. Other than the 2 banged up doors, the car is otherwise in fine form. I have begun removing parts from it & plan to part it out to gain funds for repair. I have come here for advice on how to part it out efficiently. This is my list so far: L-Fender: $40 R-Fender: $40 Radiator: $100 A/C Lines: $30 Bumper w/Frame Support & Signals: $60 Headlights: $100 Taillights: $100 Front Side Markers: $30 A/C Compressor: $20 Alternator: $20 Cruise Control Actuator Motor: $20 Cruise Control Switch: $10 Cruise Control Module:$20 Engine ECU: $20 Door Panels: $60 Dashboard Wiring Harness: $60 Engine Wiring Harness: $60 Windshield Wiper Motor: $20 Front Windshield: $100 Rear Windshield: $80 Windows: $80 Hood: $100 Trunk Hood: $60 Rear Bumper: $30 How is it that I can remove the windows without damaging them? I can sell those for a good chunk of change. I feel like this is the lucky break that I've been waiting for & I'm trying to make the best of the situation. I plan on reducing this car to damn near a skeleton when finished. If there is any advice or pointers anyone can give me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
