Sublimejoe
I couldn't find anything on the forums regarding this so here is a new thread! Has anyone cut down the shifter shaft on an automatic Subaru that has photos? I like the look of this knob but it looks absurd with the shifter shaft. http://i.imgur.com/xEyte.png
Sublimejoe
The slim version of this looks good too, but still wayy too high: http://www.perrinperformance.com/assets/2012/03/22/PSP-INR-10X_11_large.jpg
Pako
I would photoshop you a shorter one, but at the wrong computer at the moment. Can't be too hard to do though.... Just need one of these: And the right one of these: And you'd be set.

dan04103
I'll take a pic of mine but I have automatic and basically kept turning til it wouldn't turn anymore... only like an inch of visible shaft now. Much more sporty looking and a free mod. Stay tuned. Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk

dan04103
Really? I was worried it would break. Brb going to garage haha Nope no worries on breaking anything. Its nice and tight and much quicker shifting manually. Love it. Sorry I haven't taken the pic yet but I am at work.
BAC5.2
Just cut it with a pipe cutter, and die new threads. It's an M10x1.25 for the automatic. dan04103
Sublime... here are pics of my shifter mod. Sorry about lighting but you get the look. Just keep twisting... easy button. http://img.tapatalk.com/181618bd-8bc1-02bc.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/181618bd-8bd8-4f15.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/181618bd-8bea-fb3a.jpg Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
MatsuDano
This would go nicely with a shift boot.
Sublimejoe
Fail, I guess I had already done that. I am more concerned of the shorter shaft when using an aftermarket knob, since that will only screw on like an inch or so.
BAC5.2
What exactly are you concerned about? Measure the depth of the hole in the new knob. Measure that distance, plus however much you want the knob to sit above the console, and mark a line. Then take a pipe-cutter/hacksaw/whatever and cut the shaft. Then take your M10x1.25 die, and cut new threads onto the shaft. Personally, I'd leave the shaft a LITTLE longer than "as short as possible", just in case you screw up. bermo
I was thinking about doing something like this until I noticed my shifter shaft is chrome plated. Which makes it harder. Hard to cut with hacksaw. Really hard to cut threads.

I am concerned because my specialty is taking photographs, not cutting things in my car that I want to actually look good.
end0
I am concerned because my specialty is taking photographs, not cutting things in my car that I want to actually look good. I would saw you shouldn't be to worried about messing up. Both tools are pretty straight forward and easy to use. Just watch some videos of how to on the making the threads. If you have basic knowledge and use of tools I believe you can do it!
bermo
Maybe try and run the die down the existing threads to make sure the new threads cut fine. Plus, its easier to extend threads rather than start new ones.
