I love how short the stick is on that. Is the Subie STI STS as short? Pix I have seen show it looking more like your "before" pictures . . .

The Subaru STI STS is still quite tall and not adjustable. You lose leverage with a short throw shifter, so technically shift effort might increase slightly. You get used to it. I run my shifter quite short with poly bushings and really like the feel of the car going into gear.

That's right. The OEM STS is still pretty tall.

Personally, the OEM STS put things JUST right. I'd be frustrated if it were any lower or any notchier.

You do increase shift effort, but not in any insurmountable way.

Thanks for the reply. I asked about the Subie STS because I had it installed at purchase from the dealer (it took 5 days for the part to arrive and then get installed) and the OPs is so much lower I wondered if my dealer had BS'd me about it and not installed it. I did test drive the car prior to purchase and the shifter does feel smoother and sharper but am wondering if there is a quick, easy way to verify the STS was installed?

I'm sure I'm being paranoid but stranger things have been known to happen . . .

The STI short shifter option is nearly indistinguishable from stock in terms of appearence, but it does have a shorter throw. I'm sure they installed it and didn't rip you off, although I do have very little faith in dealerships.

The Cobb piece is double adjustable (throw and height) and can be set really really short, as you can see. Too bad they don't make it anymore because it is a great STS.

^looks good.

and yea the shorty boots are available from a vendor here...

also does your 2nd gear sometimes not feel like its in? i think i might raise the throw a little bit

I did have that problem with second gear and I can tell you exactly what it is. I'm assuming you're like me and did the install yourself.

Under the shifter bezel and the boot there is a surround made of foam and rubber. I tried trimming it, but it still effected my shifts. The blue pistol grip part of the shifter that allows for adjustment is just so thick that it's practically impossible for the foamy rubber thing not to get in the way. I ended up just taking it out and it made everything much crisper and completely solved the problem.

Another thing too, I had to adjust it about 5 times before I got it perfect (and I really did get it perfect). The thing takes some time and patience to get right, but it's damn worth it.

You can start by taking out the rubber and foam. At first you'll notice a little more shifter noise, but I swear I stopped hearing it after a week.

And the leather boot I have is from the vendor here (Red Line Goods). They make a very good product.

I did end up just taking the whole thing out and its all fixed... Do you put anything to act as a dust boot? Or just leave it with nothing? I'm kinda worried that dust will get into the greased part

I wouldn't worry about dust. That thing is really only in there to make things a bit quieter. When I installed it I bought a tube of silicone grease and got the ball all juicy. I've never had a problem.

hey tank do you get alot of drive train noise on deceleration?

If there's a bit more noise on decel I haven't noticed it. I put the thing the first month I got the car so I don't really remember what the stock shifter was like. I giuess I do remember thinking that the shifter linkage noise was a bit louder than stock.

For me, the little bit of extra noise from the shifter is definitely worth it. I always have the stereo on anyway.

I think this spring I may invest in some sound insulation, though. I'm getting sick of rattles and road noise.
