I found these key fob covers for the keyless fob...

"luckeasy for subaru forester/outback/legacy 2008-2014 shell car key case holder Kraft first layer 2014 key cover"

available on AliExpress:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/luckeasy-for-subaru-forester-outback-legacy-2008-2014-shell-car-key-case-holder-Kraft-first-layer/32280882219.html

US$18 aint too bad. Pretty decent quality material for the price.

The fit is bloody tight! There's no way the key will ever slip out of the case.

Only naff point is the branding on the back "LUCKEASY" which is printed in white. I tried using a black permanent marker to make less noticeable.

It came with a pair of no name mufflers which were just a bit too loud for my liking - see video

...

[ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=_E6JqlOfPyw[/ame]

And a photo...

http://i.imgur.com/krvUd1Hl.jpg

So I sourced some factory mufflers which I do prefer but will still continue to look for something inbetween.

I've seen there's a "muffler tuck" mod where you hook the muffler into the middle hole on the rubber hanger, I might give that a go; or even better try and find some shorter muffler hangers.

Pulling the old nav out continues...this is madness.

Still have to remove the unit from under the drivers seat and the wiring running up the a-pillars to what I assume are aerials/GPS.

LEDs

I picked up an ebay LED kit for US$13 shipped and a couple of parking bulbs for about US$4 shipped. One of the parking bulbs died after 1 day :(

Another couple of parking bulbs (T10) are on the way.

Also have the spotlight bulbs coming too, will be good to have those matching.

I noticed this small grate in the centre armrest console/storage box. Sliding it back and forth opens a vent to the rear ducted aircon! This is now a little cooler box, rad.

Trippy. Never even seen one with the vents for the rear passengers.

Does it not have the pull out cup holders below it?

Nah, it has cup holders in the pull-down armrest ... well, spaces to balance cups.

Nexus 7 (2012) Tablet

Planning the Nexus 7 mount. I'm using double sided sponge tape for getting the positioning right on the bracket. Then I'll use washers to push the Nexus 7 closer to the frame cutout (as the Nexus 7 isn't as thick as the Panasonic screen that was removed).

http://i.imgur.com/JrBu7Mpl.jpg

Moving the USB port so it doesn't interfere with the aircon ducts.

OTG cable

Name on ebay: Charging Data Cable USB Type A Female to Micro USB Male OTG + Micro USB Female Y

NZ$1.11

OTG Y cable allows both a USB hub and devices plus power/charging at the same time (as long as the kernel used on the tablet allows it)

Power will come in to the female micro USB. The male micro USB connects to the Nexus 7 and the female USB port will connect to a USB hub.

USB-DAC

Name on ebay: New Behringer UCA-202 U-Control USB Audio Interface Adapter in Box (UCA202) E

NZ$36.51

Timurs kernel allows the use of audio out via USB to a USB-DAC convertor which sends the signal directly via RCA to whatever amp you want to use rather than using the tablet's crappy on-board amplifier.

DVB-T FM Tuner

Name on ebay: RTL2832U & R820T DVB-T SDR&DAB&FM 2.0USB DIGITAL TV Tuner Receiver F. Laptop/ PC

NZ$12.44

Using the SDR-Touch android app you can tune in FM radio stations.

DC 12V-5V

Name on ebay: LM2596 DC-DC Step Down Converter 5-36V to 1.25-32V 3.3v 12v 24v 5A Buck Voltage

US$10.98

http://www.ebay.com/itm/271905816939?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

This is a very cool unit which allows you to dial what voltage step-down you want (so you can run a bit more than 5V and a higher amperage 3+ rather than the normal 1A or 2A from cigarette lighter power adapters).

It has screw-down inputs and outputs AND a female USB port for output! The buttons on the front allow you to turn on/off the display and to cycle through modes that show Voltage-In, Voltage-Out, Amp draw and Power draw.

USB Hub

Managed to grab this 4 port hub off a friend. Will use a mini USB to USB cable to connect it to the OTG Y cable. This leaves 4 ports available for devices:

  1. OBDII cable (for BTSSM)
  2. DVB-T FM Tuner (for FM radio on the tablet)
  3. USB-DAC (USB digital-analogue RCA to headunit)
  4. USB extension cable to the glovebox for connecting USB drives/sticks etc

ROM / Kernel / Apps

ROM

Cyanogen USBROM

http://mehrvarz.github.io/nexus-7-usbrom/

- Using a USB-OBDII cable rather than the Bluetooth OBDII dongle

Bluetooth Auto Connect

- Auto connects to phone AND turns on the setting 'Use this connection for internet' (usually doesn't get switched on). Required some pausing using the tasker app waiting until the phone's BT tethering had been turned on first (as well as a few other bluetooth related stuff like TabletTalk and SMS,MyCar,AndMe.

SMS, my Car and Me

- (actually running on my phone which I'll try get reading messages out via the AUX in on the headunit)

- Automatically reads out messages. Turns on/off when phone connects/disconnects (bluetooth) to tablet.

Tune Announcer

- Shows a toast message with the song title and artist name. Also have the option of it speaking the track name.

Tablet Talk

- Syncs txt/sms messages and phone calls between tablet and phone. Allows phonecalls to be answered/made using just the tablet.

Putting it all together

This is a diagram of how I've connected everything.

http://i.imgur.com/v01N1d4l.jpg

I might replace the DVB-T FM tuner with a wireless receiver for a wireless reversing camera.

UPDATE!

Ok I found I was having charging issues, sometimes it was getting enough juice, other times it was using battery quicker than it could charge.

The problem was the USB hub under the dash connected to the 12V-5V converter. The tablet wasn't happy getting power via this hub. As soon as I connected the 12V-5V adapter directly to the tablet, normal charging is back.

Here's the updated diagram...

Testing

Image album at: http://imgur.com/a/KOPD2

Here's some initial tests with BTSSM (no AUX yet)

[ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7XSJxWije4[/ame]

And tonight ... got the AUX cable made!

[ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY0kfxpMXh8[/ame]

Some tune announcement

[ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaepNDvIw1c[/ame]

http://i.imgur.com/SFWeG35l.jpg

And it's in!

So I had some trouble with the USB connector pulling out of the ZIF socket because the aircon vent was just a tad too tight and pushed against the socket. This was when I still had the Nexus 7 just double-sided taped to the internal metal frame, which looked like this...

http://i.imgur.com/SjoewyXl.jpg

You can see the gap between the front of the Nexus 7 and the vent frame. I need to bring the screen froward about 16mm. To do this I stacked a few layers of double-sided foam tape along with small foam blocks and then more double-sided foam tape. Before screwing it all in I also used some hot glue to secure the USB connector at the right angle so it clears the frame and the plastic vent - and also to make sure it doesn't pull out of the ZIF socket.

http://i.imgur.com/d6mZXOsl.jpg

(oops, I broke the connection out to the 3.5mm headphone jack, no worries though I don't need the headphone jack; and the USB connector still works, phew)

Finally, done and in...

Just a small piece of the silver frame showing through top and bottom, I might make a border to cover this ... or just get a black marker and colour the silver :/

Came across this OBDII extension cable and immediately thought it'd be handy for moving the USB vag-com OBDII cable I'm using for connecting the Android BTSSM app to the ECU. For US$3.50, I'd give it ago...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/191595147984?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It works perfectly, just have the vag-com tucked up and zip-tied under the dash. No more cable across the steering column, no more chance of knocking it with my foot...

First would like to say beautiful wagon! Had a couple of quick questions for you on the Nexus 7 build you got going...(looking to do the same myself)

The "BT" on the steering wheel side I assume is a "bluetooth" antenna? And is that necessary?

Also with the updated diagram couldn't you use the free #4 slot on the USB Hub on the steering wheel side for the OBDll vagcom device?

Thanks in advance and thanks for the sweet write up.

Cheers!

Yep that's a bluetooth receiver with audio output. It's not necessary, I'm thinking of using it for connecting my phone via bluetooth which then outputs that audio to the USB-DAC RCA inputs, which then in turn outputs that audio via the USB-DAC RCA outputs to the headunit AUX. This will hopefully then play any audio on the phone via the headunit (so phone calls, automatically read out whatapp/txt messages, music can be played through the car speakers). I haven't got this setup yet, still have to buy a bluetooth unit so this is all just in theory at the moment.

Also with the updated diagram couldn't you use the free #4 slot on the USB Hub on the steering wheel side for the OBDll vagcom device?

Nah, cos the USB hub on the drivers side is a power only hub, it isn't connected to the tablet. I just put one there because I ran out of ports on the glovebox side hub and I wanted to add some USB cables for charging multiple devices (passengers phones etc) in the car. The bluetooth unit will only require power and no direct connection to the tablet (as above, it's connected to the USB-DAC via a cable and to my phone via bluetooth).

Hope that helps!
