car stalls out like running out of gas but still have 1/4 tank???

Recommended Posts

so i am driving to work this morning when my car starts stalling, acting like you are about to run out of gas and then stalls completely. gas gauge reads 1/4 left, 300 miles on the trip and its been all highway on this tank so i should be good to go. get my co-worker to bring some me some gas. car starts again and i go straight to closest gas station and it stutters again a few times but doesn't completely stall out. filled up the tank with 10.5 gallons (car holds 16.9 gallons). drove it around for a few minutes, everything seems to be fine. even punched into full throttle, all seems good.

has this every happened to anyone?? i want to have a little bit on insight before i take it up to the dealer, blind.....

thanks guys.

Definitely seems like an issue with the pickup in the tank or the fuel pump. Keep us posted on the result.

So it stopped doing it for a while and today it was back. But not a full stall. I've narrowed it down to only occurring while cruising in fifth gear. They are very quick stalls while accelerating in fifth. I'm lost. But I got it on video since it never does it while at the shop.

No codes at all. It finally s**t the bucket and got real bad I couldn't drive it.

Had it towed (aaa no cost) to the local Subaru performance shop where they are currently searching for a solution. Super frustrating.

Keep us posted on the results. Will be interesting to see what was causing it.

got it out of the shop, drove it around for the day and it ran great. went to start it yesterday and it died instantly. went to restart and it wont even turn over. the dash is reading "run mode change system check"

the shops conclusion was that it could have been lose wiring but they really didnt find anything specific. they recommend that i get an access port because of the downpipe and full exhaust on the car. they said it looks like someone has definitely tinkered with the car before. I bought the car with these mods. I am down to get an accessport but it is not 100% garaunteed to fix the issue.

I feel the issue has to be computer/electrical related. when it runs, it runs great.

im looking to get a second opinion but my issue is getting the darn thing started right now...

any help would be appreciated.

i reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery. the car now turns over and sounds like it wants to start but just wont. its like trying to start a boat without the safety key on, it fires but wont run.

mods are invidia downpipe and quad exhaust. the shop is highly recommending an access port for engine integrity, which i agree with, but would this be the cause of not starting?

did you just add the DP? and haven't tuned for it yet?

I donated to LegacyGT.com which allows me to have this nifty signature. :p

If anything SCASEYS posts ever becomes a sticky i'm gonna light this whole place on fire

If you have a DP on you need some kind of tune on your car for sure.

Take out the things that are an issue.

It could be the neutral safety switch? I forget if it lets you crank but won't turn over or if it won't even crank for that.

thank you everyone. i will call the shop and run these items by them. Anyone from Maryland? Its currently at Agile Automotive in Falston, MD. They are a big subaru performance shop.

i bought the car used with the current modifications on it. one would assume the car has some sort of tune because of the DP but i have no idea at this point.

first two months of owning this car, no issues. the third month has been hell.

Lets assume there is a tune if it was stage 2 already.

My money is on the fuel pickup in this case. Prior owner probably hacked in a fuel pump and it is starting to get air in there.

Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key to the on position ? That should tell if the fuel pump is trying to work.

I had a crappy van that would do this sort of thing, stall while running, then immediately refire. It turned out to be a pinched gasket in the wiring to the fuel pump let water in, and corroded the connection somewhat. It got worse and worse until there was no start.

problem in these cars is not the pump itself. The pump will run perfectly fine, but it is the pickup tubes that do not work well with aftermarket pumps not designed for the housing that the OEM pumps are in. They suck in air and give the sporadic operation that the OP is talking about. If you don't hear the pump, there is definitely a problem, but then the car wouldn't start at all.

hey guys sorry for the delayed response, been a crazy week at work. anyway got the car back last weekend and it has been fine all week. spoke with the shop and it is narrowed down to an intermittent electrical issue. they are saying to find the issue itself, it needs to completely fail. they claim to never have seen any subaru do this before. checked all the fuel pump and other obvious issues, everything checks out.

on another note, cobb access port V3 is on its way!

I think they're barking up the wrong tree, visual inspection of the fuel pump will not show your issue, you have to remove it from the case. Maybe they did ...... I don't know...one thing is for sure...it'll do it again.

  • 1 month later...

and it has done it again. had a 3 week period of nothing then a week of it doing it once a day. then multiple times per day then stopped for a week. its very random.

installed Cobb Accessport v3 today. running the stage 2 map. definitely drives alot nicer. still cut out on me once though.

Do you know what a new fuel pump would cost and how labor intensive it is?

The DW65c is a drop-in setup. Labor should be about 1-2hrs to install so whatever the prevailing rates are in your area should be about $150-200 to install.
