AccessPORT dash mount

This is my (cheap, simple, ghetto, effective) AP dash mount idea.

 

First, I had 2 vent-clip air fresheners just laying around that I couldn't find oil refills for. And even if I could find them, who would want to cover up the new car smell of a 1 month old car Once the new car smell goes away, I'll probably buy an Air Spencer Squash that everyone can't get enough of.

 

As you can see in the pic below, the clip is just snapped into the back of the air freshener

Just pull out the clip and snip off the tip to make it flush. Careful trimming with a knife or file may be required.

With both clips from both air fresheners prepped, I just zip tied them to the AP.

In the car, I routed the USB cable from the dongle through the dash and steering column to the AP on the vent to the left of the Nav.

And now I have an easily removable mount for the AP.

Decent solution. Now to get some gas

People have used the cell phone holders that clip to vents. Looks mach better plus is probably a little more secure. Also can be had on ebay for about $.99!!

The phone holder is kinda cool, but I don't believe it looks $10 better. This mount is really secure, so there's no incentive for me to go with the phone holder. I suppose with a little more rigging and some adhesive velcro (to remove the AP from the clips when/if needed) I could make it look like it's just floating over the vent.

i did something similar but put in on the vent to the left of the wheel

I thought about putting it there. Do you get any reflection at night off the side window with it there? Another reason why I put it next to the Nav was to keep other drivers from coming up my left side and seeing the AP displaying data, getting all stupid, and wanting to race. This is V8 country, and everyone has to prove themselves to the imports. I'd rather stay sleeper-er.

There's room on the dash just above the left vent to velcro it (with the fuzz stuck to the dash and the hooks to the AP) -- and that way the cord can run around the base of the A-pillar trim. I do this with a cell phone holder, and it works great -- it's discreet and easily unhooked and stowed. HPH

my only problem with this is that the part that plugs into the obd port isnt tight... if i hit bumps or take a turn to sharp it wiggles loose and shuts off, then makes a connection again and resets the AP... does anyone else have this problem?

Anyway, here's what I mostly drive around with, a phone holder. Note the (charger) cord, which isn't plugged in:

...and here's the AP stuck to the same Velcro fuzz (which is stuck to the dash; there are two strips and the AP has a couple of extra Velcro hook/fuzz layers on the upper strip to shim it into a better position to read):

Nice set up! Where did you get the cell hpone holder?

The cell phone holder is a belt clip, with the clip part removed, from Verizon (for the particular phone I had at the time, a Razr V3). I did some Dremel surgery on it to allow the phone to be opened without popping out of the holder. HPH
