ABS Sensor

Need some help.

 

ABS sensor , passenger right side , on my 1998 Legacy GT needs to be replaced.

 

I got one from the junkyard, but it had wrong connector,

so I spliced in the old connector. It doesnt work.

 

So I ordered a new one supposed to fit my year and model.

It has the same connector.

See pic. below

It's a brown connector.

 

However the connnector I have on my car is a grey connector with slightly different shape.

I guess I need to order another sensor.

 

Anyone else have this problem ?

This is pic of the incorrect ABS Sensor connector.

The one I have on my car is grey, and has the slats in the middle of the connector, not at the bottom.

So this brown connector wont fit on my car.

 

I need to order an ABS sensor with the grey connector.

Anyone know the part number ?

 

Splicing in the grey connector didnt work....

Well, I did splice in the old connector. ABS light still on, and yes I did reset the PCM/Computer.

It didnt work. So either that ABS sensor was bad.

or my splice job was bad, but I doubt that ...

 

Anyway, I got a new ABS sensor now.

I'm thinking that Outback sensor was not compatible...

Probably a reason they put in different connectors ....

Update:

 

Installed Grey connector ABS sensor, part number ALS 833 and it worked fine.

 

After a few minutes of driving the ABS light went out.

Haven't had a situation needing ABS yet, so cant really test that for real until winter weather. I usually do it in snow covered parking lot.

Slam on the breaks, get it to skid, and look for the pulsing break pedal feel to prove that the ABS is working.

I forgot to give the back story for why I needed to replace this ABS sensor.

Wheel bearing failed, and the tip of the old sensor got ground down.

I replaced the wheel bearing, but broke the ABS Tone Ring in the process.

Had to get a new tone ring and wheel knuckle from a junk yard.

They dont just sell the tone rings...

Also got an ABS sensor, but it was the wrong one, brown connector for an Outback,

which I've shown doesnt work on a Legacy GT.

I've only had ABS work a couple of times in 14 years.

On wet and snowy roads.

The ABS pulses much quicker than you can pump the brakes.

 

I've had experience pumping brakes in ice rain before,

and I prefer ABS to pump faster than me....

 

Now I just jam hard on the brakes and keep pressing.

You feel the ABS pulsing if it kicks in.

 

However with ABS, most people dont know what to do when their car skids.

Best practice for this is to do doughnuts in a snow covered parking lot, and see how your car reacts.

You learn how to steer out of a skid.

You're actually supposed to steer in the same direction as a skid I think.

 

Fun to fish tail with a rear wheel drive car.

 

With these AWD cars its a lot safer, and harder to do that.

 

I've done complete 360 on a rear wheel drive car on the highway in a snowstorm, not on purpose mind you.

That was very scary.

abs is not as awsome as all people think. i perfer old fashion staight hard line brakes to the wheels. no bs to deal with then. i have spare abs parts if anyone needs.

 

I'm on board with this. Old fashioned hydraulic brakes without the extra garbage is the way to go. When you know how to properly use normal brakes, they are safer then ABS IMO

I think the key point you make is with the proper footwork, practice, know how.

 

I'll take the ABS for my wife, as she is never going to get that or practice it.

It's better to tell her just to stomp on the brakes and keep stomping....
