its not just the VB. swapping an entire 06 transmission into an 05. ESP didn't want to pull the VB out and sell it, wanted to sell the whole transmission

AFAIK there are changes to the ecu and thus the tcu every year, at least on the software end of things. Hardware can be much more expensive to change, so they give us a break on that for a couple years at a time

So I decided to attempt my first brake boost launch today on my stock obxt. The revs are apparently limited to 2800 rpm! I wasn't expecting that. The brakes held quite well during, but with the pedal completely down, the tach just bounced around at 2800. When I let go of the brake, I got ok acceleration, enough to open my sunroof cover and displace everything in the car to the back, but not even a chirp of the wonderful stock potenzas. Is there another way to get the turbo to spool for a launch?

I'm not planning on doing this continually, I was just curious. There are a lot of people who have done it here with no problems and are apparently able to spool up the turbo before launching. I obviously didn't buy an OBXT for drag racing... I'm not too worried, because I'm on stock power.

Place car in neutral, stand on brake. With brake depressed move to drive. Brakes will grab better this way.
Now floor it. RPM will only climb above 3k once. Then drop back down and hover. You only get one shot at it before the fluid gets too hot and the torque converter gets unhappy.
As soon as the RPM go over 3k let off the brake. You should only be powering up and on the brake for a second. Car will give you its best launch.
I am not advising anyone to try this. If you know the history of my cars, I already lost my 2008 5EAT even with the IPT VB and other mods. I only took 6 trips down the quarter mile in 30k miles. Day I went stage3 tranny crapped out.

seabass if you want some faster spool you'll need to look to go stage two. that's about the best sure fire way to get more flow going on.

With time I will. I'm going on 2 weeks with my OBXT. Once I get all the maintenance stuff finished, I'll start with suspension. I've already ordered the cable to start logging, so just a matter of time until intake/exhaust up pipe and down pipe and tune. That's as far as I'm willing to go on this car. As of now it's my only car...so reliability is the most important thing. I'm probably going to do 1 more launch just to see how it does, then I'm done until I buy a spare trans. I have to do something about this awful suspension first though...and wonderful stock tires.

seabass, keep in mind, the stock 5eat tune is often torqueless at low RPM. This is something that is often fixed at stage 1.

I'm really trying to find someone that has done this I can't imagine that someone on here hasn't already done this
Thanks again

Screw the trans swap, just do the VB. If you have the trans there, take the VB out and head to the shop and have them swap it. It should cost less than a whole trans swap. Put your old VB back in the purchased trans and sell it.

So, I never heard from anyone, how much ATF actually drains from the pan? I want to know what to expect. I want to get enough ATF for 3 drain/fills, so if it's 4 quarts that come out, I need to get a 2.5 gallon jug + 2 quarts.
|
Get a light colored bucket that will hold 12 quarts or so and mark it at 4, 7 and 10 quarts. Drain the pan into it and plug it back up. Take off the return line and point it into the bucket. Start the car and let it idle until you get to the 4 qt line. Shut if off and add 3.5 qts to the trans. Go to 7, add 3, go to 10, add 3. Reconnect. Take a drive, check the level and top up. Good for another 90k miles. Don't forget to change the filter first.
I'm pretty sure the pan will drain less than 3 qts. It seemed like a waste of time when I did it. Until I dropped the pan to get more. That was a waste of time. Less than an extra cup for that, I'm sure.
Also a waste of time: disconnecting the supply line as well, trying to minimize the spill when changing the filter. Just put a cloth under the filter to catch the drizzle. Without it you'll be cleaning the inside of the bumper cover and the wheel well.

Seriously? Drained less than 3? If that's the case, then I'm headed to a shop and have them use a machine. That's a big waste of time and ATF.
