I read in consumer reports that in their test of the 3.6R they noticed a slight hesitation when accelerating from a rolling stop. I was just wanting to ask all you 3.6R owners if you are noticing the same thing.

I hope not because we had an 07 camry that did that, and that was biggest reason for getting rid of the car, but in the case of our camry I would say it was more than a slight hesitation.

I don't have a 3.6 but I have read about the hesitation in these and there is a supposed fix coming soon from subaru but don't hold me to that. As far as the hesitation compared to the camry I don't think it is as bad as those were.

Can you disclose where you heard about the possible update?

So I guess it is an actual issue owners are having and not just something Consumer Reports noticed. I hope there really is a update to fix the problem, because I won't have a car that does that again.

Yes there is a lurch or hesitation in the transmission in the 6 cyclinder legacy.

It is not noted when going from a full stop.

It happens when you are slowing down from 60 to 20 mph, and than attempt to accelerate back up to 60 mph.

The transmission attempts to search for the proper gear and than lurches forward.

Subaru should come up for a fix hopefully ASAP.

There are a lot of people on the Outback forum who report having the same problem with the 3.6.

It seems to me that it would just need some sort of computer update to correct the problem, right? I know probably easier said then done, but it seems like it would have to be a programming problem vs mechanical.

We had a similar type of hesitation of issue with our GMC Acadia. GM did come out with a software update, but it wasn't until the 2nd year. And then it took them 2 updates to minimize the problem.

Minimize, not fix, that figures just enough to get people to stop complaining about it.

Yup, there's still people unhappy with that transmission, me being one of them. Although I think the issues were more severe than what it sounds like for the 3.6. I didn't notice the issue when I test drove the 3.6. We are supposed to get our 3.6 next week so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

So just keep the accellerator fully pressed in at all times and there should be no issue

Seriously though, I got a better understanding of the issue after reading the Outback forum thread. The issue is one of throttle response.

I didn't notice the issue when I test drove a Legacy 3.6R. I got to test drive the car without a sales rep, so I drove spirited and had some fun. Thinking back to my test drive, I don't recall ever slowing down. I expect I didn't have the car in the same siutation of where the issue is.

I can see the issue being very annoying, and a potential safety issue. When a person tells the car to go, it needs to go.

Just a final thought - is it possible that people aren't driving the car hard enough? Doesn't the ECU learn driving habbits or something (or is this an urban legend)? Do spirited drivers see the same problem as non-spirited drivers?

you're exactly right when you say it is annoying and a safety issue, on the camry we had every time I had to slow down for oncoming traffic to pass to make a left hand turn I'd wonder if it was going to take off or not. When I took it in they blamed it on the drive by wire throttle, but our Altima has a drive by wire throttle and it works perfectly fine. In my opinion it's not something you should have to get used too, its something that should be fixed.
