covertrussian
05 Legacy key is big and bulky, then you add the fob which is huge too. Luckily subaru switched to a key & fob combo for 09 legacy's that we can use for ourselves. Information about the new key: Part Number: 57497AG48A FCC ID: CWTWBU766 IC: 1788D-FWBU766 New styled key on the left (from 09 Legacy), old key on right http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220975&stc=1&d=1449591467 New styled key on top, it's bigger then the actual key but overall smaller then old key and fob. http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220976&stc=1&d=1449591467 Note: It's a good idea to try to program car key to your car before you get the key cut. This way if your car refuses to accept the key, you can return it. Key programming steps can be found at the bottom of this post. Take the new key apart and you will find the fob, transponder and actual key http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220977&stc=1&d=1449591504 You can take the key to the dealer, pay $80 to get your ECU repogramed for it. Or you can salvage one of your current keys and steal the transponder from it. I decided to take the transponder from my valet key. On a non valet key it's easy to find which side the transponder sits, on valet key it's a guessing game. http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220978&stc=1&d=1449591504 http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220979&stc=1&d=1449591536 http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220980&stc=1&d=1449591536 Pulled the current transponder out, keep it just in case, put new transponder in (don't mix them up!) http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220977&stc=1&d=1449591504 Next take apart the fob part, there will be a white paper with two 8 digit codes. You need the top code to program the key. Take a picture of it/write it down. http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220981&stc=1&d=1449591782 Put the key together and go to your car. http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220982&stc=1&d=1449591782 http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=220983&stc=1&d=1449591809 Programming the Fob Programing the fob is annoying and overly difficult on the Legacy. On the 04 Forester (and my Nissan's), you put a car into programming mode, press a key on the key fob and done. But no on the legacy you have to punch in the 8 digit code into the car twice using your lock and unlock button! Get in the drivers seat and make sure all of the doors are closedOpen and close the driver's doorInsert key into ignition and twist it from LOCK to ON 10 times within 15 seconds, leave the key in ON position.Open and close the drive's door again, you should hear electronic beep and continues buzzer along with interior light will flash. You have 45 seconds to enter the 8 digit code in using your lock/unlock door buttonPress lock the amount of times you see the first digit for, then pres unlock to move to the next digit. In my example pic code (12345678) you would press lock once, unlock once, lock twice, unlock once, lock 3 times, unlock... until you type all of the digits in.Once you have entered the 8 digits there will another sound, now you need to reenter the number the same way you did it before. If the two codes match there should be a beep and doors will lock and unlockPress lock and unlock on the key fobThen take your key out of the ignition and wait for relay to clickOpen and close the driver's doorWait a little and the key fob should now be working More details on the steps an example video can be found here. Underdog
You are on a tear today with your walkthroughs - nice job! You might want to mention that the P/N for the '09 key is 57497AG48A. The Crimson Dynamo

Plakosme
So if I buy this key: http://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav=item.view&id=360574289251&alt=web I'll be able to program the fob myself and have a locksmith cut and program it for my 2006 legacy gt? I'm working on filling out my profile by the way just bare with me.
covertrussian
They will work but keep in mind they are cheaper knockoffs. I got one for my Forester and it doesn't work nearly as well as the OEM key (softer key metal, buttons don't always work). I would honestly look out for an OEM one I magically got mine for $45 shipped. 05 LGT 16G 14psi 290whp/30mpg (SOLD) 12 OBP Stock 130whp/27mpg@87 Oct 00 G20t GT28r 10psi 250whp/36mpg 22 Ascent STOCK
Plakosme
Ultimately I would like to get an oem part. It's tricky knowing for sure on the internet. I assume the recommendation is to buy it from the dealership. For $45 I'd be all over it.
covertrussian
You can probably find it a lot cheaper online. Just scout the web/ebay for the correct part number and verify with the seller that it's Subaru OEM. 05 LGT 16G 14psi 290whp/30mpg (SOLD) 12 OBP Stock 130whp/27mpg@87 Oct 00 G20t GT28r 10psi 250whp/36mpg 22 Ascent STOCK
Underdog
Or maybe hit up one of the many OEM vendors on this site, who contribute knowledge and help pay the bills to keep the place running. BadgerLegacy
So I ordered this part number off of Amazon and it doesn't seem to program to my car. I got the transponder to work with the ignition, but I tried programming so many times I blew out my old key fobs from the computer. I assume I am doing the process correctly because I got the old fobs to program properly, but the new one just doesn't seem to take. I did try taking it to the dealer to have them try to program it and they said that the computer and fob weren't talking to each other. Did I end up with the wrong part or is there anything else anyone can think of to make this work?
covertrussian
Got a link to the one you got? Maybe you got a cheap knock off... Mine took no problem right of way. The cheap ebay one I got also worked on the FXT, but I wouldn't suggest it they are crappy compared to OEM (much weaker metal and radio strength). 05 LGT 16G 14psi 290whp/30mpg (SOLD) 12 OBP Stock 130whp/27mpg@87 Oct 00 G20t GT28r 10psi 250whp/36mpg 22 Ascent STOCK
BadgerLegacy
This is the one that I bought. It doesn't seem to have any part number printed on the key itself, but there is a "model name" on the transmitter inside: TWB1U766 ALPS. Is this the same number everyone else has? covertrussian
Part numbers are usually not on actual parts, only on plastic bags they ship in. One of the reviews is saying two keys they got from them didn't work and they had to resort to the dealer one. Verify these numbers on the back of the key cover: FCC ID: CWTWBU766 IC: 1788D-FWBU766 05 LGT 16G 14psi 290whp/30mpg (SOLD) 12 OBP Stock 130whp/27mpg@87 Oct 00 G20t GT28r 10psi 250whp/36mpg 22 Ascent STOCK

covertrussian
I would send it on back, with that one review it seems like your not the first one to have issues. JazzAvi8r
bringing it back from the dead. I recently purchased an 05 LGT Wagon and it only came with one key and one remote. I would like to have a spare key and remote because my wife is notorious for locking her keys in the car. here's the catch: the PO installed a remote start on the car where the trunk button on the remote activates the remote start. now, getting a new remote and programming it is fairly straight forward, the key is not. If I take it to the dealer to have a new key cut and programmed, it will clear out the aftermarket setup and disable the remote start. is there anyway I can clone the one key I have instead of getting another key with a different Tx code on it? Ideally, I'd love to do this mod from this post, but I want to keep my remote start. thoughts?
ethanrbutler
Hey, just wondering if anyone has done this on an 08 spec b or if there is something special about them that this doesn't work? I've tried about twenty times and can't get the lights to flash or audible response after key turns. I'm definitely turning ten times in under fifteen seconds; I'm to turn past accessory to "on", the notch before "start" , correct? Thank you in advance for any assistance. -Ethan
ethanrbutler
Ok, got to the beeps and blinking. I have the correct fob, all numbers match. I understand the process I believe; for 313 I click "lock lock lock", "unlock" ,"lock" "unlock" "lock lock lock" "unlock" After typing my number the audible and blinking lights CONTINUE but no new sounds. Am I stupid? I just hate this stupid key! It's so obtrusive and hurts in my pocket at work all day!
