05 LGT Turbo Bearings

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering how common failure of stock Turbo bearings is? The dealer I service my car at, informed me yesterday that there is a noise coming from the turbo due to the bearings. Cost to replace turbo (inc Labor) $1900. Not sure I'm ready to fork out that much on a car with 131,500 miles on it.

So I wanted to know if this is a common failure or not? Currently thinking of going with a remanufactured unit for a lot less than the dealer price. Any recommendations on who to use?

yeah pretty common esp at that mileage. if your turbo is making noise, the more you drive it the more damage the engine itself incurs. if your turbo is audible making noise like marbles in a can then your engine is likely going to be shot as well (evidence of metal shavings in oil)

You can get a brand new 16G turbo from BNR for $725... it would cost less than a grand to pay a shop to replace it AND getting a tune for it combined.. save yourself some money and stay away from the dealership.

Ditto,

I went with a vf52 but I DIY.

The main thing is you want to have a repair shop do the labor not the stealership.

You should also have the banjo filter removed and learn to check your oil every week and top it off as needed. These things use oil.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

+1 common at higher mileage

Good thinking. BnR can get rebuild you one for something like $350-400 IIRC not including core fee (send in your turbo after and they refund you the core)

I was being lazy with my multiquote and wrote "+1 common at higher mileage" instead of...

Your better off to go with BNR16g it is a direct replacement and should be able to run on the stock tune. In a few day's you can get a Tuner to set the car properly.

Just call BnR and have them rebuild a core. They should have a couple in stock now. Get your "new" turbo installed, send back the old one for your deposit.

BnR is respected on the forum, responsible to the forum community and has been trying to keep us happy for a few years now on top of years of experience outside of the LGT community.

Contact Cody at LoveFab. He may be able to help you or recommend someone.

My son was in contact with him a few years back. He helped out with our yellow civic with the single cam. He may remember.
