05 LGT Fuel Filter Retrofit

Recommended Posts

Update, here is how I bypassed the in tank filter and added and engine bay filter instead.

As most of you already know there is no dedicated fuel filter. It looks like it's part of the fuel pump, not easy to replace, and needs whole unit to be replaced. On my 04 FXT there is a dedicated fuel filter in the engine bay, easy to replace as needed. My other Nisasns were the same way, fuel filter in engine bay, fuel pump does still have a sock on it though. Even with the sock, there is still usually plenty of dirt in the fuel filter, esp after 100k miles.

Using pics from my 99 Sentra since I don't have Forester pics

Stock Sentra Fuel pump has sock, similar to LGT:

Walbro 255lph installed, has sock on it too

Thus it's not unusual to have two filters in the same system. I wonder if we can add on an additional fuel filter in the engine bay (like the 04 FXT has). Maybe we can make the fuel tank one one less likely to clog since the secondary filter would do most of the filtering before injectors.

Here is why you want to have an inline fuel filter still. This is a 10 year old fuel filter from a Infiniti G20 (fancy Sentra). The fuel pump filter is not as precise, nor should it be because that would cause fuel pump starvation that would burn up the pump.
