racing a Legacy Wagon the Pac NW 2014

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this forum and want to intro myself. I'm also new to Subaru Turbos and Legacys. However I did once have a 1981 Subaru Wagon I drove across the country a few times.

I've just bought this car and am bringing it back to racing:

I'll be racing it in the ICSCC ST class across Oregon, Washington, British Columbia this year. I may do some NASA events too, not sure.

Anyone who wants to come help a Legacy Wagon mix it up with Corvettes, Mustangs, and STIs , I'd love to draw on your knowledge about Subarus and their Turbo engines. Your welcome to join my pit crew at any event!

I'm also building and 818R, more on that later...

Thanks boxkita. I'll definitely be bringing it to a couple of meets in the Puget sound and Portland area. Salem and Eugene too if there are any.

Beauty! Isn't that the car that was racing in Grand Am Continental Tire Koni Challenge a few years back?

Yes it is! 2006-2007.

Hells yeah, hope to see you at the track next season. Only two years into my wagon being track only. This is what I hope it looks like a few more years down the road :) Love to hear more specifics on the car. Power, tranny mods, suspension. Any more pics! Nice...

I'll have it at ORP for it's first session. ACCO and Team Continental will host a Track Day and Driving school that qualifies for ICSCC Novice License.

We are planning for March 29, 2014. It should be up on Motorsports Reg soon, I'll post the link when it's up. I hope to meet some of you there!

Do you know what turbo is on the car? From the description I read it sounded like your wagon was still on the stock Vf40/46. I remember seeing a STI at the ICSCC races last year running the stock Vf43/48 but that is a higher flowing turbo then the 40/46. Keeping up with a Vette might be tough on the stocker.

Edit

Looking at the pictures and seeing as it has the sti manifold instead of the plastic lgt/wrx piece and how the turbo connects to the intercooler piping has me now believing it has a Vf43/48. Either that or a td04 (02-08 wrx turbo)

In the ST class it's not about who makes the most power, we are all limited to 10lb/Hp. I will probably have to turn down the boost! That's good thing for racing reliability. The rule makes it much less expensive because we all aren't running our engines on the edge of blowing up. Then it becomes suspension, aero, and driver ability. The wagon will be at a disadvantage in the aero equation, but should be a blast to race anyway. Even at 10lb/hp it's still a very fast class.

That sounds really entertaining. What sort of aero modifications are you allowed to make? Can we expect to see a Leggy wagon with a park bench sitting on the hatch? And as far as suspension, it it limited to stock pickup points or can you really go crazy?
sorry...this forum practically blows goat nuts so im not always on here.

Rules for conference - http://www.icscc.com/references/comp_regs_2013_complete.pdf

Giving the "stretching" of the rules by the mustangs in the same class, there's quite a bit of latitude on mods.

Ouch, those rules make it tough to put a wing on a wagon :(

A rear spoiler/wing may not be wider than the width of the car, not including the mirrors. The wing/spoiler may not extend further rearward than 6 inches from the back of the rear bumper. No part of the wing/spoiler may be above the original roofline. All wings must be behind the centerline of the rear axle.

But not impossible :icon_twis

On the other hand, fender flares and a 6in front splitter are okay...and I'm not sure exactly what "OEM strut towers...in their original configuration and intended usage" means for messing with suspension, but I see plenty of room for messing around.

Looks like a fun class!

One of the mustang drivers found a loophole in the front splitter rule and has a huge splitter. The rule said no farther forward than the bodywork. So he had the body shop create a double width bumper. His splitter is about 6 inches farther forward than stock.

Unless I mis-read the rules, section 9.1.4 of the GCR applies to this class as well - http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/assets/2013%20GCR%20mobile-December.pdf

specifically calls out stock body appearance must be retained. Perhaps converting to an Outback would be best :-)

Wing rule for wagons:

Cars with a wagonback/notch-back/hatchback style body may have the rear wing assembly, including the end plates and any wicker, mounted a maximum of 4.0 inches above the highest point of the roof. For this subsection, a wagonback/notchback/hatchback style body (or variations of these) is a car in which the rear edge of the roofline is no more than 28.0 inches forward of the rearmost bodywork as measured along the vehicle longitudinal center-line.

Yes, I'm looking at different rear wing options. I'll probably fab one based on some of the designs I see on the WRC cars.

Pickup points can be changed as long as: "Every vehicle must retain its OEM strut towers, frame rails, floorpan, and firewall in their original configuration and intended usage, although the floor pan and tunnel on the driver's side may be modified for driver safety and comfort. Partial tube-frame chassis conversion is not permitted. If the car could not be driven normally with the tubes removed then it is considered to be tube frame."

However I won't be changing the pickup points, that gets very expensive.

For details see the ICSCC Rules Here, ST class starts on page 86: http://www.icscc.com/references/comp_regs_2013_complete.pdf

A wing like this is effective, but limits rear vision:

To see in the rearview I'll probably do something like this:

Actually it will probably be more like the wing on the 2014 Honda Wagon race car in the BTCC. much simpler to fabricate and can be adjusted:

Very nice! If you come to Portland I'd come down and say hi and maybe help out if you'd want.

I know PIR by heart, ORP pretty well, but I've not been to the Ridge yet, although it's all from the seat of a motorcycle. Best of luck out there.

  • 1 month later...

If the weather is good I will be bringing the car to the Bendlow Fest on Saturday at Subaru of Bend.

http://bendlow.wordpress.com/2014/01/09/bend-low-fest/

Also Ali Afshar of ESX Motorsports and his 1600hp 7sec Subaru BRZ will be there.

If it's snowing or raining I won't, the car has no front windows. Either way I'll post up some pics this weekend of the restoration work.

  • 4 weeks later...

The wagon will not be at ORP this weekend. It's at Cobb/Surgeline and will not be ready in time.

I'll be there driving my Aura Integra for the T&T on Saturday, then on Sunday we'll have it in the 8 hour Rat Race enduro.

Hope to see ya'll there!
