Also, TDI models come with more options than the gas model... almost $2k more of stuff, so the difference becomes negligeable. You are right, you keep a diesel long enough, you might recoup your additional up front costs. At the end it's still just a Jetta though and while they advertise diesel performance...it's slower than the gas model.
