My 2012 EJ253, CVT (although a slightly different version of the 2.5) hasn't consumed a noticeable amount between oil changes and I have run it out to ~7000 miles on conventional 5w30. I did my first oil change at 5000mi and I'm at ~21K now. My plan since ~12K has been nothing but Subaru filters and inexpensive synthetic 5w30.
I may be a bit old-school in my thinking, but a heavier oil would burn slower. However, I can not run anything but what the manufacturer recommends as I have a 100K mile warranty and don't want to blow it.
