Just take your time and apply the sealant around ALL the outside edges and anywhere there are fluid holes or passages. It can't hurt to do the entire surface. You will see by where the crank sets in the bottom half on the oil pan side obviously will need none. Use sparingly as it WILL get squeezed out into the cavities on the inside and out. It does not take that much. Make sure everything is squeaky clean and free of any dirt.
