Having driven a Highlander for quite some time, I see the point - it drives like an okay sedan, but has a serious ride height advantage. In a sedan, you sit in the car, most crossovers, you sit on the car... if that makes any sense. On a long trip, either is a wash for me. On a trip in California? I'd rather have at least a crossover, so I don't get dwarfed by all the massive trucks and SUVs on the sea level streets (and it only gets worse up in the mountains).
We had a foreign exchange student who laughed at all the suv's and pickups on the streets. He used to ask why people drive around with the beds of their pickups empty and no other passengers in their 7 passenger vehicles when their isn't any snow or need for four wheel drive.
