he want's daily stock power, lol. but, even then, i know of two people with fmic vf52 setups on stock injectors making over 300whp. at the moment his mod lists needs improvement with other items first if he wants more power. injectors with a vf52 would be the last thing i'd upgrade.

Chris Chris Chris. You are not helping my situation right now!

Appears you could skip replacing the coolant pipe and just run a length of hose, being sure to affix the hose clear of the header crosspipe. Just a thought. I have aspirations of needing more room down there.

if I had to guess, subaru used that metal pipe as a heat collector from the radiant heat off the header in efforts to warm the coolant. much like the old carbed cars that used heated chokes

Thanks for the tip on the TVG's, I have this nice little SS wire brushed that should do a good job without to much pressure.

Kevin, your not helping me here :)...I don't need to spend more money. It's making 280whp on the mustang dyno that's about 300 on other dyno's. With the heads porting Eastwoods is doing I should pick up a few more.

Here's the old cylinders, I'll try and post #2 top side the worst first.

Not bad for dino oil and 154,000 miles. Have to run now, need food.

They also said the heads looked good, nothing like what they see a lot of from the dealership.

I asked them how they got the cams out, they went to the dealership and borrowed the tools.

Stopped by the shop today after getting a voice mail. Sorry no pictures.

The heads are ported, cleaned, reassembled, less cams. They took .005" off the decks to make them flat, all the valves were good so it was easy.

I'll post pictures of the ports when I get the engine home.

I picked up a bunch of hoses from the dealer today. Don't tell me you want to see pictures of the $319.00 worth of hoses. I ordered a TB hose and intake hose too, but they are in that price.

I also bought a can of undercoating, I'm going to undercoat the new crossover pipe from the water pump to the oil cooler before I put it on. Hopefully that will help keep it from rusting.

you might need new buckets. put the cams on the head once the head is bolted to the block, check valve lash to be within subaru spec. i cant stress this enough

When I stopped by yesterday, Dan said that what he was getting ready to do. He had the lap top there and was checking the spec's and asked me to verify the correct model year.

He had a bunch of numbers (measurements) written done on the heads in sharpie marker.

These guy's have been thru this before. They do a lot of Subaru engines for the dealerships.

I had to order the 4 little black plastic plates that go behind the cams. The gasket set didn't come with them. When I told the parts guy that, he said, yes, sometimes the OEM gaskets kits or missing different items.

Ha then I would say oh ok so that means I get them for free right?

Byron, what was the cause of you burning oil?

This is a different rebuild than I've seen before, simply because you didn't have any knock before teardown. Theoretically, could you have kept the short block, got a new gasket set, head work, pistons, and acl bearings, and reassembled? Wouldnt that have saved at least a $1300? Or is that 1300 worth the piece of mind?

No, I talked with Mark Eastwood last year. For the cost of labor to take apart and rebuild one of these compared to a in-line 4 or V8 and the fact that everything is brand new. He can't beat the cost of $1800 for the OEM shortblock.

If I wanted Wiseco pistons and better rods, then he could do that, but for my HP goals, that didn't make sense.

I hope that explains it with out going into great detail.

We feel the rings are worn, Mark has seen that in other EJ's, that is why is used oil. When one of the members here picks up the old short block in and opens it up, then we'll know for sure.

Just got a email from Eastwoods, they need oil actuator gaskets as well. Called the Matt at the dealer, they will add them to my order.

Was funny yesterday, When I talked to Brett at the dealer, and told him Eastwoods came down and borrowed the cam tools, he smiled and said he was who they talked to and figured it was for my heads.

It's nice to have this kind of support.

The black plastic things you speak of are the half moons.

Yes, I remember them being called that. I'm not good with those technical terms. ;)

I'm guessing some where north of $4000. maybe as much as 4500. Remember, I'm doing this with the mind set of keeping the car for years. If you add in the new vf52 last Aug, the tranny rebuild last July, the rear diff last May, the new starter and left front wheel bearing Jan 11, oh yea the left rear wheel bearing last month. The cost is pretty high.

I think most of us who have thought about rebuilding the engine and made a list, have a good idea what the real cost is to do it somewhere close to right.

I'm also getting a good discount on the OEM parts too. I have to thank Jason (CT08Spec.B) for that contact.

Oh Yea, BTW, so the GF ask me the other day...so your going to have that car painted too, aren't you...LOL. I said, well....it's does need some. I think she wants to paint the inside of the house first...

Here's one of the corner of the shop.

They said if I bring the timing belt kit and oil pump and pick up down they'll put all that on. It didn't take much convincing, for the peace of mind.

that would be me

im going full build route, its not cheap by any means but what is?

i may tear the block down to get it ready and see how the ring or ringlands look just for curiosity sake.

im suspecting rings were just worn w high miles.
