Mounting the detector near the dash isn't a good idea, it is better for lidar but most of the time whenever you get hit with laser your screwed anyway (unless you have a jammer). Most people and radar detector manufacturers tell you to mount the detector high for best line of sight with radar.

Yup, its better to mount it high for that exact reason. Lower is better for laser detection, but till this day I haven't got hit with one, and I don't like mounting on the windshield cuz i have tint and i dont like the dash mount cuz it shakes a lot. I travel from SD to LA and back almost once a week and all the CHP I've ran into shoots out Ka band (I always run into 3-4 of them per trip), but no laser. The day I get a ticket from a laser, I will feel justified to get a $500 range laser jammer.
Oh, and Escort Redline is the sht!! Saved my ass again last weekend on 5 SB. RD detected Ka, I slammed on the brake, the guy that was tailgating me passed me and speeds ahead and ended up getting pulled over!!
