The 2.5 was the only engine for all L's and GT's 00-04, they never had another engine choice in the US. The Outbacks could be had with the H6. Maybe in the 00-02 the suspensions were slightly different but in the 03-04 years the BE/BH chassis were pretty much being phased out as 03 was the last year of that chassis in Japan so they had the same swaybar combination (21mm f/15mm r like on my 03 L) and I have a sneaking suspicion the L and GT's just got whatever strut/spring package subaru had left in the parts bin.

Perhaps the feeling of being more luxurious is why the GT is about 150lbs heavier than the L.
