  1. Agreed. Kinematics are pretty fun to figure out. Despite the different ride characteristics out there, it's incredible how many tweaks there are on a relatively small number of truly different designs. Kashmina = marketing > engineering;).
  2. I've got one I'll sell ya. Real cheap;). So does that also make the Ripley one of the best you've ridden? I'm really excited for the 429 trail. Hope to demo one in the coming weeks.
  3. Until recently a buddy rode a '10 (or 11?) I rode an '04 for a season. Biggest difference was the trail worthiness of the new v. the old. They're still pigs, but you can actually get away with a fair bit of climbing here and there. He did "push" the rear, as well as pop in a volume reducer, which dramatically improved the way the bike used its travel, which has always been the gripe for those things. He had a new'ish Bos up front, which was ridiculous. Some of the lesser known suspension companies these days are putting out products that should really put the big boys to shame...but they're all really pricey. Minons front and rear. I think the new ones have gone a bit more slalom/slopestyle, no? SLX these days is pretty nice, maybe less so in '11. You're right, though, the parts spec on the Stumpy is better. But 5 years of wear and tear, and a few generations of tech improvement might even that score. Little differences in geo make for huge differences in ride, and as mentioned, the pedaling platforms will feel different, shock aside. If you're still xc inclined, and want to try 29ers, I say go for it.
  4. The only thing I might suggest is budgeting for a stiffer wheelset. Inherently flexy wheels were one of the things that kept folks off 29ers for so long.
  5. ^^^Yes, everything is better. Really. This has no correlation to how much fun you have on your current bike, however. I have to remind myself of this on a weekly basis to keep me from doing something stupid.
  6. ^^^Just how reasonable? If 29" is what you're after, sure. I think you'll like it, though its pedaling platform may feel a bit active. No less efficient, but different. Either way it'll be faster for sure. Make sure you inspect the seat tube/top tube juncture. They didn't hold up so well. There is a 3rd option:) Ride the old bike for another season or two and pick up something newer. The jump from '06-'11 was huge. From '11 to now? Arguably more so. Essentially, you can get (near) xc efficiency with all-mountain fun, and you needn't break the bank.
  7. Chest-mount looks good. Appears there's some decent speed to be had if you want it.
  8. My next bike will definitely have larger wheels, but it's suspension design that's got me looking for something new. My sb66 has been great, but I've been itching for a more active platform for a while now. Despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to suss out any real penalties to 27.5s. They're theoretically less playful, but the 27.5 bikes I've demoed have been so damn good I haven't noticed or cared. I hate to admit it, but there are a small handful of 29ers I've ridden that have been pretty fun as well. And fast. I plan to race more in coming seasons, so even marginal improvements in overall speed may take precedence over "fun." Edit to add that with the possible exception of the new 36, my next bike will not feature the crap that is Fox suspension;)
  9. Fun trail for sure. One of the "new" rebuilt trails in the area that gained some air and flow without losing its edge. This is more of a Carhartt & chewing tobacco area than a black dress one. I think that's a burned-out stump:).
  10. Before the 50"+ of snow we saw in February, January pretty much looked like this... at 8k ft. http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g419/Bradkanderson/20150214_085229_zpsx2fatt04.jpg
  11. Anyone have experience with YT Industries? They're distributing to the US now, thinking the Capra might be a nice fit. http://www.vitalmtb.com/product/guide/Bikes,3/YT/Capra-Comp-1,14534
  12. ^^^Sweet. I'd like to hear more as you get more time on it. The Trance Advanced is on my short list. Those enduros did have awesomely tight chainstays, eh?
  13. Word. Rode a Bronson C last month and it was hard to find fault with it. It lacked character, perhaps, but that's a stretch. Price tag is tough to swallow!
  14. Looking to get rid of the SB for something a bit different. Anyone spent time on '14/'15 bikes yet?
  15. Eventually leads to this... http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g419/Bradkanderson/DSC_0115_zps080af15a.jpg
