Just did this today, to simplify for everyone, you do not need to take out the whole panel, just remove the two plastic pop-its/clips on the side, pull down the panel and reach your hand in there....

Well, a STI plate frame comes from the dealer and is a genuine Subaru part, whereas a badge might be...well, just a badge.
For me, it's OK to have a STI badge as long as you have some STI parts. ;)
