If it has been making that noise for 8k miles then that is most likely piston slap. You can try using a thicker oil to help quiet it down but I wouldn't worry about it.

Best advice: Don't drive any other cars so yours won't feel so slow. There is not much on the road slower than a 2.5i Subaru so you pretty much can't drive anything else without feeling slow.

Torque bind. My 2.5i 4EAT had the same issue. Did a complete change of the ATF to BG full synthetic and the problem was resolved.

It's not a new trend, it was done for many years. Most cars in the 70s had the mirrors mounted on the door. It is more aerodynamic to mount the mirrors that way.
