I think they were cut shorter for future maintenance (remove/replace) purposes.
It is easier to take our the inserts with that setup but I could be wrong.

Just don't use a snow brush on the roof during winter.
Also, soak the roof first with water when washing the car.

I had my roof vinyl last summer as well. Installed glossy vinyl from local shop for $160 +tax. Also applied wax on the roof every time I wax the car.
