I have done the removal of the plastic shield. I have not seen or felt a negative effect by removing it.
It also allowed me to have a better tie down location for my HID battery harness. 10k miles...

My car didn't come with a stock USB port. I think you only get that with the Limited models. Instead mine is a 2.5i Premium w/ the winter package. All I had was an Aux. port (ie: headphone jack).
