The car, when cold, would shut off if allowed to return to idle. I don't mean it would sputter and die, but it would for a fraction of a second return to idle and then as if you turned the key off...

Well, mystery solved. The intake manifold boot was over tightened, probably at assembly, pinching the hose. Eventually a hole wore in the boot, ergo my prior idle issues because I did have a vacuum...
