Check the front inner CV boots, when they open up, they spray the grease all over the place, including the exhaust. It cooks on there and you get a horrible stench coming in through the fresh air...

I had to turn around and take another route three times this morning because the roads are still blocked with abandoned vehicles (http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/#), and people trying to get them...
