  1. Bought my first big-block AR, a Sig 716i Tread in .308. Topped it with an Athlon Ares ETR 1-10x, swapped the muzzle device for a Xeno brake and headed for the range this morning. The 8lb trigger wasn't helping things, nor was the fact that my shooting glasses kept fogging up. I was still able to ring steel out to 250 (the limit at our range) without any issues. The gun ran fine, and after zeroing, I mounted my Nomad L for the rest of the morning. Need to get some different bullet weights and find out what it likes. 2. Finally scored a target .22 off GB. Made a run at a couple different auctions before successfully winning one for a Hammerli 208. There were a couple different candidates, including Walther GSPs as mentioned above, but I'm completely happy with the Hammerli as an example of a competition level pistol. I only had time for about 3 magazines at the local range when I picked the gun up. The first two were CCI SV, and after making the necessary sight adjustments, I shot one mag of Lapua. A few decades ago, I might have been able to do this gun justice, but I'm just not as steady as I used to be, and I have to use readers to see the front sight. Also, the factory grips did not fit my hand well. I was able to find a set of Rink grips in the proper size for sale here in the US, so they are on the way. We'll see if that, and some practice with it helps...
  3. A few minor updates in Miataland... The NB got a different set of wheels. I wanted bronze from the start, but my wife insisted on black. Once I put the bronze set off our NA on it and she saw it in person, she relented. Fortunately I was able to turn the black wheels locally for no real loss. The NA is currently going under suspension surgery, getting delrin bushings and new springs with a higher rate to complement the aero. A while back I scored a complete set of control arms to facilitate the swap, which is still taking much longer than I planned, but at least all the prep work was done ahead of time. The turbo plan has also changed. Some 2022 rules changes have resulted in the goalposts getting moved, and the new plan is to run the car in NASA TT3 instead of TT4. This requires more power (~280whp), which puts it at the top end of the GT2560R capabilities for track use. So, the GT2560R setup will be going on the NB street car. The race car will be getting an EFR6258. This required a different manifold, and I've finally received it from Kraken. It's a low mount, which should make hot/cold side plumbing a little easier. Beautiful stuff! Downside is that the car will not be turboed until '23, so I'll continue to run the TT series I've been running and won't be getting into NASA competition this year.
  4. Spent the day on the range Tuesday doing carbine training. Used it as an opportunity to run-in my Turbo K. And I ran it hard. ~600 rounds for the day, from CQB to 100 yards. I'm using the Dead Air Xeno mounting system with a birdcage muzzle device. Never came loose, until I wanted it to, and then it came off easy. This suppressor is not what I would call "quiet", but nothing really is on a 5.56 gas gun. What it did do is take the noise level down to tolerable for "serious use" without earpro. Less than a 9mm... loud, but no pain, and no ringing. Shooting with earpro for the day, it was really pleasant... like shooting a .22 with a little more push in the recoil. Zero muzzle blast, and no muzzle rise with the suppressor. Not what I was used to with this 11.5" gun. Shot faster and more accurately than I ever have with it, and I've had this particular Colt since 1997. Of course, the price of a suppressor on an AR is it gets dirty. Nasty dirty. These were the rounds that were left in the mags at the end of the day. All in all, very pleased with the package at this point, though I am looking at going to a more compact optic. The Aimpoint is bombproof, but it's a boat anchor, and enormous by comaparison to more modern optics.
  5. Don't currently own a .22 semiauto target pistol. Had a High Standard Victor almost 30 years ago, but never really took to it. I do have an S&W M17, but it's not really in the same category. Mostly interested in one because I've never owned a target pistol in the 'olympic' category. I mostly meant that my skills are likely inadequate to appreciate the difference betweeen a 1970s Walther olympic pistol and a current Pardini olympic pistol.
  6. Would love to have a Pardini... but I can't shoot any better than a 50 year old GSP can anyway, and they're a lot less $$$$.
  7. Makes sense if things are serious to use the best ammo available. I've been wanting to pick up a .22 bullseye competition style gun. Just missed a Walther GSP on GB the other day. Not that I'm going to be competing, just like the discipline to work on my fundamentals. My best shooting days were a few decades ago...
  8. Depends on the match.... if there were prize money, I might consider it. Right now CCI SV is $5/box and Eley/Lapua are $20-25. Figure 2.5 boxes/match... the juice just isn't worth the squeeze. Same reason I don't spend the $$$ on Hoosiers for the track.
  9. Got out to the range yesterday and did some ammo testing in my .22 Tikka. I have been using CCI SV, which shoots very well in it, but wanted to try some "good stuff". I finally got my hands on some Lapua Center-X and Eley Tenex. I also had some SK Standard that I had tested previously, but wasn't all that impressed with. I thought I'd give it another shot... pun intended. The first two sighters were just some warm up with CCI SV, and once I reset the zero, the third sighter was a 10 shot CCI SV group. All subsequent groups were 10 shots, and I rotated through the ammo shooting a group with each before returning to the same type. The Lapua and Eley were the clear winners for accuracy. I preferred the Lapua, as the Eley had just enough velocity to go supersonic and was louder through my suppressor. The SK wasn't really any better than the CCI, and the CCI is pretty darn good, though it does seem more likely to throw the occasional flyer than the "good stuff". Being as the Lapua and Eley are 4-5x the price of the CCI, I'll probably just stick with the CCI and suffer the occasional flyer. And the CCI has been a heck of a lot easier to get. I also shot my 11.5" SBR with the Turbo K can... loud, right at the line for being tolerable without hearing protection, but not as loud as an unsuppressed 9mm. In other words, just what it needs to be for a defensive gun.
  10. That's actually better than I was thinking it would be.
  11. I like the idea of the OWL, with everything in one compact package, but I would have preferred if they'd put the switch a little more offset from the light to make it a little easier to use on the off shoulder. I have yet to see one in person to see the light ouput firsthand. I've been really impressed with the HL-X... way better throw than the SF Fury lights on our work guns. Ran the Turbo K on my 16" gun this morning. Definitely loud, but useable without hearing protection. You wouldn't want to shoot it all day, but exactly what I was looking for for a defensive gun. Still need to shoot it on the SBR, which will definitely be louder... Forgot to take a pic of the 6.5 with the Nomad L, but it's really quiet! About a 2" POI shift at 100 yds.... need to get it out again to see if that's repeatable.
  12. I recently switched both of my "serious" ARs to the Streamlight HL-X rail mount with Cloud Defense switch mounts, and have to say I've been very impressed with both. The light output is fantastic, and the switch mount at 12:00 on the rail works really well for shooting off either shoulder.
  13. My stamps came in! Submitted in late October (Paper Form 4/Trust), so earlier than I expected by 4+ months. Looking forward to getting out to the range this weekend....
  14. The original Artillery model Luger was designed to be used with a detachable stock, but it only had an 8" barrel. I've never seen a Luger with a barrel that long, but with enough $$ you can do whatever you want, I guess...
  15. Anyone who's ever dealt with attorneys could tell you that's the likely outcome. Back to the subject matter, here's one to piss off both Fudds and Tactical Tonys...
