I'm pretty happy with how the numbers show. As I figure it (from GT3 hehe), a 400hp Legacy could do the 400M peaking at about 111mph. This puts it at the peak hp rpm area, around 6000 in 4th gear. This car's gearing has tuning planned ahead. 8)

4th and 5th are almost identical to the WRX for rpm at any given speed, will make for a familiar cruise minus some of the road and wind noise :)

overall numbers are better than the new TL and at par with the RSX (type S included) & TSX. should be good with just 5MT.

This Excel sheet shows gear ratios and more importantly, overall ratios (gear x final) except for reverse of a lot of different Subaru and Legacy "competition".

Nice. Basically 3000 rpm at 75mph. I can handle that. The only reason to have a sixth cog on this car with this engine IMHO would be to have an overdrive gear so it would run about 2000rpm at 80mph. But I'm more than happy to live with the five gears since they seem well spaced.

The only problem with revs that low, is the lower displacement engines like these don't have quite as much oomph at those lower rpms. I'd say even 2300-2600rpms isn't bad at all for 80mph if they added a 6th cog. Wouldn't make the engine work too hard, but still just off of decent response. :)

It all depends on where boost comes on. Always keep in mind that in top gear, a turbo car will never be too far away from boost. If you are in an emergency situation where all you have time to do is mash the throttle, if you're chugging along at around 2500 rpm in a hypothetical sixth gear, that time you need to get on boost could be too much time. I think the ratios will be most excellent.

I have updated the list to include the 5EAT ratios as well as the JDM Forester STi geartrain and how it compares with the USDM WRX STi gear ratios (5 and 6 being the only differences.)

I hope this helps for some individuals. :)

I don't know what these numbers mean in terms of acceleration. Are you guys saying that first gear will be good for 60 or that you shouldn't need to shift before 60 in 2nd?
