Nexus 7 tablet install
So over the last few weeks I've been collecting bits & pieces to get my install underway.. There are still a few minor things I'm waiting on but on a whole it's ready to go!

Flashed Nexus 7 with Cyanogenmod 10.2
DCDC power supply
4 port USB hub
JDM 7" nav panel
Info panel relocation kit
Plus additional odds and ends like glue, brackets, additional cables etc..

Haven't got any pictures yet but I have worked on my home screen. I'm using Nova Launcher and here is a screenshot so far of my work.

I'll update once more is done.

Holy cow, cluttered screen.

I like the idea though, please continue the good work and document your process!

I just bought a 2013 N7 and put CM10.2 on it too!

I agreed it's cluttered and I actually spent the day today fixing it up.. I think the logos add to the cluttered look so I've since removed them and also removed the clock and date and made it a more simplified thing.

Have you played with Zooper Widget at all?

Nope, I'll go grab it and try it out.

I just CM10.2'd my Nexus 4 today. Forgot to do a full wipe which had me worried that I had bricked the phone for a while.

So made some progress this afternoon on the install.

Got the Nexus mounted up on the fascia kit. I used a hard back cover, some L brackets and 2 part epoxy. 2 holes drilled in to each air conditioning ducts saw it held quite well just using small screws and bolts.

I then worked on moving the I/O assembly from the base of the Nexus to the back as there is not enough room to connect the OTG cable. This was done by removing the back cover & battery, prying up the copper battery shield and straightening out the ribbon cable across to the opposite side of the tablet. I then cut a hole in the back cover and hard case and mounted the I/O assembly in a junction box which I gutted using a dremel. More 2 part epoxy on the hard case and done!

To tidy things up and take the strain off the connection of the OTG to the USB port I simply used a cable to tie to secure it in place. Will probably use another cable tie to secure the OTG cable to the hard cover as well.

After much bench testing and frustration I finally have it working successfully. For future reference, your standard AC wall charger doesn't output enough voltage or amps to mount and read a HDD or standard USB stick.

This means you must use a reliable power source (I have a DCDC-USB power supply) that can supply 12 volts and enough amperage. Also, a 3.0 HDD requires a splitter and additional power out of the DCDC to function correctly.

Nice work OP.

FWIW there's a fairly active thread on the same topic

Not necessary and looks like shit. Pay attention and drive.

great idea!

really needs a screen protector for that glare and I would take advantage of lockscreen widgets to clean up the clutter too. just my thoughts.. :icon_mrgr

GL with project, can't wait to see it in the car!

I have a normal screen protector on there at the moment but there is still quite a lot of glare so I've just purchased another matte screen protector to try.

I cleaned up the home screen quite a bit and now just have a Poweramp widget, Spotify widget, Subaru logo, small clock, weather logo and navigation shortcut. I'm currently working with Tasker to customise operation even more.. Commands like autoplaying music when it wakes from sleep, screen brightness at particular times etc... Any other ideas you have for Tasker will be welcomed.

Here it is in-situ with Poweramp opened playing music. It's not a brilliant picture as it was quite dark and taken with my iPotato.

Dual screen nice!

is it connected with your radio system at all? have you got it to play music over the speakers?

seanmau5 09-17-2013 04:01 AM

Yes. I've got it flashed with Cyanogenmod which allows it to host via USB. Audio is through the OTG Y cable into a USB hub then through a USB DAC (Behringer 202) into the head unit using a 2 channel RCA via the AV in.

I would love to be able to extend the tablet on to the head unit but not sure if that's supported yet.
