I hope that gen 2 Outbacks are welcomed in this forum (I saw there's a section for the gen 3 and 4 Outbacks, but not one for my gen 2), but at any rate, I wanted to say hi and introduce myself and my 2001 Outback. I bought the car in 2009 with about 90,000 miles on it and now have about 124,000 miles on it. Other than normal wear and tear repairs, the Outback has been a great car.
It's actually my wife's daily driver and because of that, I've used a lot of willpower in resisting doing any mechanical mods to it (other than putting in a K&N panel air filter in it) the same way that I've done on my daily driver, a 2002 WRX. But I recently got a good deal on some barely used 18"x8" Drag DR34 wheels, so I've finally given in and decided to upgrade the wheels & tires on it. I wasn't trying for the "hellaflush" look (I haven't changed the camber nor lowered it), but one of the things that I don't like about this Outback is how the wheels are set too far inward on the car and there's too much horizontal space between the tires and the edge of the fender.
These new wheels have certainly cured that. I really like that the tires are now right at the fender's edge, along with the lower sidewall profile of the 225/50/18 tires, and that the gunmetal color goes well with the "titanium pearl" lower body cladding. Plus, I think the look of the Drag wheels is a nice balance between being sporty and unique without being gaudy and screaming "aftermarket." Other than the wheels/tires, the only other mods I've made is to install a K&N panel filter and disabled the DRLs.
