engine rebuild

hi, so I have a 2003 legacy L and had done the headgaskets three times in the last year and finally decided something else needed to happen. I took it to a mechanic and he rebuilt my engine(2.5L) with a 2.2L block, he said that the heads were warped and he machined them down 5/1000. I have just got the car back and it seems to have a knocking noise coming from the top of the engine, also after a quick test drive a noticeable lag/loss of power. Any Ideas? was this bad or good?

I keep driving it to see whether it will go away or get worse and today i noticed you can feel the knock or tick in the gas pedal at about 2k rpm when driving. ANything? please!

Talk to your Mechanic, your motor should not have a knock if he just rebuilt it. He needs to make it right.

I wanna know if he relashed the valves I know that can cause a knock/ticking pretty badly not sure if it's your issue but I know it's needed for rebuilt motors

putting in a 2.2 block, with 2.5 heads will drop your compression from 10.5:1 to 8.2:1 (ish) so youre loosing good power and probably running rich as sin now. as for the knocking. my assumption is pistons hitting the head. but piston slap has been known to happen against the rods. all in all. couldnt tell you.

i have also noticed that instead of the 28mpg i was getting before i am down to something ridiculous like 18mpg. Could this be because its running rich?

Also I have noticed some sort of shifting problem, it doesnt shift hard, just seems to be not at the right time, when cruzing around 50mph it wont shift into overdrive like it should it holds right on to 3rd gear at about 3100rpm. At 60 it will finally shift into over drive and drop to about 1500rpm but if you touch the gas it drops right back into 3rd around 3500-4000 rpms
