Homelink Mirror Power

Anyone know why my Legacy needs to be running or have auxillary power in order for the Homelink Mirror to function? I've had several other vehicles in the past that didn't need to be running or even have the key in the ignition in order for the Homelink garage door openers to work.

the power source for the mirror is switched - you could always run your own wire from elsewhere under the dash from a constant +12V so that it's always on. Our van has the homelink always on - not a good idea, imho. Had a friend get their garage broken into when they parked in the driveway - someone got into the car, opened the garage, and made off with their tools - not cool!

Just got a 2013 and the mirror works with the car off. Perhaps if it is factory installed that makes a difference?

Hmm...two 2013's with different experiences. Sounds like you have the option to either have it on or off all the time. Check your owners manual.

2012 Legacy

It is a PIA, but when the car is off the homelink mirror buttons do not work. In my wife's Honda the homelink buttons work as long as you have the keys in the car, which I guess is the best of both worlds.

If someone can figure out a quick fix please pass it along.

Easy, tap into the dome light power side. It has constant power when the ignition is on and has a delay when ignition is off and power anytime the door has been opened.

Yes, it's a security feature. One of the many excellent reasons to use Homelink rather than a separate garage door opener, IMO. Thought: the radio turns on if you have the key in but not turned on 5th gens, right? Why not plumb it off that circuit?

Mine doesn't.

Mine in my '12 doesn't either. I bought mine after buying the car and not realizing I had the cheap, plain mirror.

Anyone know of a way to keep the compass feature from being on by default each time?

Picky1 03-06-2013 08:43 AM

Turn off compass

Just press the button labeled - N - on the far right when the car is on to turn off the compass.

I'm having my dealer look into this as well as I have two different behaviors in our '11 Outback and my new Legacy.

The outback (and every other car I've ever owned with Homelink works with no acc)
The legacy requires acc to be on

Security makes sense, but it's a departure from how it's operated in the past.

Are you sure about that? Both my 05 LGT and my 07 Spec.B requires ACC to be on, as does my dad's 2010 Outback.

gibjer 03-17-2013 03:26 PM

Yes, positive. My STI behaved the same way.

thefultonhow 03-17-2013 04:12 PM

Why would Subaru keep changing the behavior back and forth? :iam:

My wife's 11 outback works with ignition off... and this is from the factory not the dealer install.
