Strut Recommendations

After only 50,000 miles of driving, I am beginning to feel the struts wearing out. Time for new ones. I don't want too firm of a ride, but stiffer than stock would be okay as well.

Any suggestions?

Should I try new springs as well to stiffen or will struts be enough?

Springs will not be enough and they will wear out your shocks even faster. It's what happened to me with my Swifts. Only struts available are the 2013 Legacy OEM ones (firmer), Bilsteins are still in production.

Well, there is also Excel-G's from KYB. They are an OEM replacement but KYB told me they are stiffer. The increased stiffness they also said was to compensate for worn suspensions.

Not sure how much I trust KYB "OEM replacements".

Ditto on springs killing suspension. That's yet another expensive issue with mine currently. It's not bad enough for other people to notice yet so I'm hoping SOMETHING other than coil overs comes along sooner than later.

Right now I'd say stay stock or go coil overs. Strut availability any time soon is a crap shoot.

Didn't I hear someone say the 09 wrx struts work fine?

I changed the struts for Konis and kept stock springs. Firmer ride and the floating sensation is gone.

It's more than that ... The bushing are so soft they are blown out as well. Alignment is suffering. Will not buy new tires until bushings (and struts) replaced.

Still up for waiting it all out for the Bils. But time is ticking away in a few month maintenance will overcome patience.

Ayup. Basically I'm looking at going back to stock.

Let's be realistic. It has been F'ING YEARS of delays. I don't believe a word out of anyone's mouth about anything happening strut-wise for the 5th gen.

They may never come and I can't be eating stock suspension components every 20-30k. I don't like the springs THAT much.

minuccims 02-16-2013 02:14 PM

The car still responds so much better with the springs and blown out strut/shocks.

SurlyOldManMN 02-16-2013 02:19 PM

Eventually worn struts/shocks become outright dangerous. I've got a hunch that is coming up fast for more of us than are aware. At that point it's stock or coil overs.

Waiting isn't a choice once it becomes a safety issue.

The iron is rapidly cooling.

Looks like the wrong thread actually

I want the money to bring them in from Japan.... :(. Should be direct swap I would think

fredrik94087 02-16-2013 07:41 PM

I don't know if any KYB fitment for fifth gen. If you know a part number or a website, please post it.

Ditto on a "going back to stock suspension rather than riding with blown shocks"

As far as OEM or coilovers, I'd say coilovers. However, each has their own "feel" with handling.
