Oil Consumption after switching to Synthetic

I have been using DINO 5w-30 oil for the last 70K miles. Since going with a larger turbo last year I finally decided to try synthetic and I recently switched to Rotella T6 5w-40. About 1500 miles after switching to synthetic, I noticed that the engine was about a quart down and topped it off. Now that I am at 3000 miles the oil is again down a quart. I never had any oil consumption with DINO and I was wondering if it makes sense to stay with synthetic or switch back?

Thanks

I use Rotella T 5/40 synthetic and I do not see any oil loss until about 2500 miles into a change and then I am only adding 1/8 of a quart when it is low. My engine has 146,000 miles on it.

Even though your consumtion is higher, I would not worry too much about it. You could get an oil analysis to make sure everything is happy though. I would also make sure you are reading the dipstick under the same conditions each time. Our dipstick is a bit dodgy to read.

There have been threads in the past about people switching to synthetic and then the car starts eating some oil. I always used synthetic oil, until I bought this car. I generally don't see a loss of oil unless I am getting on it semi hard. Like the above post stated, 1qt every 3,000 is considered normal. However, since you switched oils you will have to monitor to establish a new norm.

check for oil leaks, especially around TMIC

Used dyno for 67k, no oil use. Found this site 18 months & 10k miles ago and switched to Rotella T6 5w40, still no oil use, car is stock right now, going stage1 maybe that will change things!

1 quart every 1k is considered acceptable by the manufacturers.

Can you please share the source of this information ?

A quart every 1,000 miles seems a little much.

It is a lot (mine does this :( ) but any Subaru tech will tell you this. Kinda SoA's way of dodging the bullet. It usually is more noticeable when you have a larger turbo and are running higher boost. Damn non-forged internals and shotty rings...

Stick with Rotella. The synthetic oil is cleaning out all of the dino crap. If consumption continues after 3 oil changes, try a High Mileage synthetic like Max Life Full Synthetic or Mobil1 High Mileage. The additional seal conditioners may help. Your consumption really isn't that bad though IMO.
