Very High Pitch Noise - 2011 Legacy 2.5i

Hi Everybody,

I've encountered this strange high pitch noise when I start my vehicle in the morning (temperature is 20F or below). The sound is so high pitch, it sounds like it's coming out of the speakers, but the sound system is off.

The noise appears to be coming from the engine area and the noise will go away completely when the engine/oil temperature is warm. I initially thought it may be a belt of some sort...

The noise isn't really a squeal that a belt would make. I would describe it as a sound a radio would make if it were being interfered with.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Nick

I think I heard the same noise yesterday. It went away as soon as the engine was warmed up. It only happened once out of the three cold starts yesterday. I think the temp was 8F.

Has it happened to you more than once?

Ditto. Happens consistently when it's cold out and I don't let the car fully warm up. Goes away after warm. Def seems like it's from the engine/rpms, and possibly tied to load. I notice it most at lift off or light throttle.

Theories?

I think it has happened to me only once, but I just happen to turn my radio off and heard it. My wife has been driving my car the last couple days when it was really cold so I didn't have a chance to listen for it again.

Could it be the fuel pump?

The fuel pump is under the rear seats.

it might be some intake resonance
