Oil opinions!
Hey guys since I've had my Subaru I've been running castrol high mileage 5w 30. What oil do you guys use and why? What do you recommend as being the "best"?
Thanks |
castrol is recycled oil, one reason why i don't use it. i use Shell Rotella T6 5W-40, why? feels better than all the other ones i used, that is my opinion
|
For oil look at this thread: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...nfo-79800.html
Which oil to select - there are about as many opinions as there are people on the forum. Recycled or "Fresh" - it shouldn't make a difference, the base for the engine oils we are using is a composition of a lot of unwanted components that are filtered out one way or another and the recycling process does it the same way. If anything - recycling may be easier since the spectrum of foreign objects is more limited. |
I think the only general agreement is not to use Mobil1 on a turbo
and Fram filters. Otherwise it's an argument of who has the better lubed e-peen. |
On NA car, any good quality oil of using correct weight is fine. Checking to make sure your oil is at full on a regular basis (like every gas fill-up, as stated in the owner's manual) is more important for all subaru's than anything else IMO.
Castrol is "recycled" oil huh? Care to back that up? And if you mean Group III vs. Group IV oils among the synthetic category, pretty much every big-name brand uses the hydrocracked Group III in full or part formulations, whether they like to print it in the label or not (ehem Mobil 1) |
I've been using Rotella T6 as well, for a couple years. Partially out of laziness, because I can use one oil in just about anything. I use it in the Legacy, the Tacoma, and my motorcycle, since it doesn't have friction modifiers.
Check it, change it every 5k, win. |
I don't have the luxury of finding Rotella oil so I put Royal Purple in mine. Feels smooth and I'm not having any problems yet
|
I was about to reply...Don't you have a WalMart?
Until I relooked at your location. |
Royal Purple makes great oils, especially diff fluid, but so darn expensive
|
Well its settle then I'll be using Rotella. Have to get a full tune up for the car cause it will be going in for some modding and work. Plus have to get her ready for the summer

I didn't ....but that doesn't surprise me
I hate that place most days. I'd rather drive the extra 3 miles to Meijer or Target. |
I'm picking up some T6 and OEM filters this weekend after I get her back from the dealer for repairs I don't want to do myself.
|
T6 and WIX filters only!
|
Do synthetic on a 5000 mile oil change and you'll be fine.
I use OEM blue filters and the 5W-30 synthetic that I get the best deal on (Currently 6 qt of Shell for $25). I typically do a 3500-4500 mile OCI. Next, I'll buy some T6. |
