need to replace engine on the cheap

ok, so I got the compression test back and the left bank is low, both in the 30s..... so I need to pull the motor. Local shop can replace a motor for 800 (labor). I used to be able to do all of this, but being in doctorate school now I simply can not swing the time needed to do it. I did not ask about replacing the shortblock alone.... But I am kinda weary about getting a used engine.

If a get a new STI block they would still need to clean up the heads right? so i'd still be in it for 2k for the block, another what... 1k for the gaskets and whatnot that needs to be replaced, and then more labor to do the actual disassembly and reassembly. doesn't seem to be cheap at all.

any other thoughts or things I may be overlooking?

Do you need a clutch too ?

The EJ257 is about $2100 with a gasket kit.

My machine shop buddy charged me $1200 to,
dissassemble the old long block
do some porting on the heads
rebuild the heads, I didn't need any valves
reassemble the long block from crank pulley to oil pan

I installed the FW and new clutch, intake manifold, etc and installed it in the car.

Then I met with my Tuner so he could make sure the tune was good after the 500 mile break-in.

looks like I will need to be going to shortblock route and have them clean up the heads. only engine I could find was for 4.5k with 60k miles on it. just doesnt make sense.

is there a preferable shortblock to use? STI block? standard legacy block? anything that needs to change if I use something other than a 05 LGT block?

Check out CarPats.com, you can find some used engines starting around $2,700. Hard to say what condition they are in unless you can see if they can do a compression test.

Otherwise, with rebuilding the motor, at least you know what's going to be done and the condition it's going to be in. You should be able to have the motor rebuilt for less than $3,500. Labor, shortblock, gaskets, heads refinished.

08-12 STI block(ej257) will get you the Nitrated crank(better). I have heard the 255 and 257 BLOCKs are the same, internally using the B25 heads with STI pistons will give you a static compression of 8.7:1, slightly higher, but not a big deal. Check Hueburger Subaru, Vendor on this forum.

that's exactly what I was wanting to find out. knew there was something SLIGHTLY different. I'll find the price on the STI block and roll with that, then seek help on the CR tuning. thanks.

EDIT: going with the STI block, is the WRX/LGT flywheel still gtg?

This is the best price I've seen on new short blocks. Local to me. But shipping is not too bad.

Damn, that's a good price. Almost makes me want to buy one JIC.

The problem with getting a used engine is that you don't know what you're getting. Even if it shows good compression. You will also pay similar, if not more than just going the new short block route.

The part number you want is 10103AC030. I just bought a new short block from one of our vendors here, Heuberger Motors. They are having a 25% off all parts sale, here is a link right here for the short block http://heubergersubaruparts.com/cata...5892&makeid=32 Why buy off of ebay when you can have a forum vendor and authorized Subaru dealer get you a new short block for $1645. You can also see that the part number for the short block is applicable to both the LGT and STi.

I know it's already a big expense, but some things you may also want to consider is a new 11mm STi oil pump, and a gates racing timing belt kit with water pump. You'll also want the gasket kit which is about $225 or so at Heuberger.

Here is another option. Not too bad of a price for a shortblock either.

Just as good of a deal, and you're buying from a forum vendor and authorized Subaru dealer. They had mine to my door exactly a week after placing the order.

^ the ebay vendor is Heuberger
