634,000 Subaru Vehicles Recalled

Subaru is recalling as many as 634,000 vehicles in the United States for potential lighting problems that could lead to smoke or fire, according to U.S. safety regulators.

The recall by Subaru potentially affects some Forester vehicles from model years 2009 through 2012, all Legacy and Outback vehicles from model years 2010 through 2012, and some Tribeca vehicles from model years 2006 through 2012, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 633,842 vehicles potentially affected by the recall may be equipped with accessory puddle lights that when lit brighten the areas under the doors, according to NHTSA documents.
A Subaru spokesman said the recall involves only 53,999 cars equipped with the lights, but the wider number of owners must be alerted because the company does not know which cars have them.
There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue, but there was one report of smoke, the spokesman said.
A short circuit can develop when the light or connector are exposed to an electrolytic moisture source such as road spray that has road salt in it, the NHTSA said. That can cause heat that could melt the plastic, resulting in smoke or fire.
Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional harness, the NHTSA said. The recall is expected to begin next month.

Really it's only 54k cars recalled. Guess we know now that roughly 8.5% (54k / 634k) of people go with the puddle lights.

So if we don't have the puddle light, no need to check with the dealership?

OK I'm a bit confused on which ones are the puddle lights.

Is it the accessory that you install afterwards? (https://www.subaruonlineparts.com/pr...roducts_id=845)

Or is it the lights underneath the driver and passenger side doors? (are these called courtesy lights?)

However, I bet that 54K is only including the cars built with it.. (menaing actually on the window sticker). I wonder how many got it installed after the fact :spin:

If they were on when you drove around yes.

Luckily these actually serve a purpose (only turn on when you unlock the car or open a door) and therefore aren't rice.

thanks for posting this up, how will an additional harness fix the problem?

It has an inline fuse that will blow and stop things before the car catches fire.

Depends. Might be pretty badass driving down the road with smoke coming from underneath your doors.

Saw this on Twitter earlier today, but luckily it seems like this was never an option on the South African market...
