CR Not Impressed With 2013 Legacy

"With a mild update, the Subaru Legacy dropped a couple points in its overall test score, falling a bit short in refinement and performance.

For 2013, Subaru tweaked the steering and suspension, which helped make emergency handling more secure and predictable. But the changes also robbed the car's ride of its plushness............"

Not sure how to take that. A lot of us are dumping cash into getting rid of "plushness" they say has been removed in favor of stability under "emergency" situations. That sounds like a plus.

^agreed.

exbagboy 12-18-2012 12:05 PM

I laughed when I read that. The body roll was unbearable stock.

Reminds me of a test drive I took years ago in a new Volvo.......the salesman kept raving about how it had "Big Car Ride"....that was all it took for me to buy something else. ;)

the general public isn't like enthusiasts, they don't want firm rides, but instead smoothness...so it makes sense to me

it's hard for Subaru to please everyone...

OTOH, some people missed the "plushness" of the earlier Legacy, like this customer (and a legacygt.com member???) at Tirerack:

"Stock tires on 2010-13 Subaru Legacy with 17" alloy wheels are the Turanza EL400-02. They were reasonably acceptable on my 2010 Limited model, however, for 2013, the Legacy's suspension was tightened up to decrease body roll by 40%, resulting in an ultra-stiff & harsh ride except on only the smoothest of roads. The base model with 205/60/16 tires isn't as harsh but the 17" 50 series tires on the Premium & Limited models pick up an excessive & unacceptable amt of road feel & roughness. After several trips to the dealer & mucho correspondence with Subaru of America, I decided, at only 3K miles, to take them off and replace them with the new Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus tires. The difference was amazing - the vehicle is transformed - I've lost only a minimal amt handling compared to the stock EL400...................."

This person comes to the same conclusion that the OEM Turanza EL400 tires are crap, just for a different reason than a more performance oriented person =)

Agreed. I installed a rear sway bar and put on new tires and the handling and ride were better. I'm now used to the big car ride and don't miss the ride of the previous european sports sedan.

Since when has a Subaru ever rode with "plushness"? They have always been smaller, lighter weight vehicles.

I suppose CR can be a decent guideline for purchasers, but when it comes to vehicles, I've always formed my own opinion when it comes to ride, handling or performance. Those characteristics are waaaay too subjective a few people to come to those conclusions alone.

2010-2012

Quick question: Do you know how much a legacy weighs compared to the other cars in its segment? Hell, even to some trucks?

Probably similar weight. A quick check shows the top end Camry at nearly 3400 lbs and the top Accord at nearly 3600. I imagine the rest of the competition is similar.

Exactly. They weigh right around where all 4dr, mid-sized 4cyl cars weigh.

A new Nissan Altima weighs ~3100lbs

Ford Fusion ~3400.

New Legacy is ~3300.

Everything is a heavy hog today.

Philberto 12-18-2012 05:26 PM

Curb weight of a 2011 Legacy GT is 3477 lbs. 2.5 is around 3350 or so. (cars101)

2011 Toyota Camry manual 2.5 is 3263 (edmunds)

That's just a quick and dirty research. Damn heavy turbo. And twice pipes. Must be lead in the intercooler.

Or that fact that there is only one trim level and it includes everything.
