Normal price range for head gasket replacement?

Subaru continues to disappoint me. I probably would've saved a whole lot of headache by buying a Honda! The latest hit is that while spending nearly $400 today on routine maintenance stuff (like battery and belts - no complaint there though, expected expense) I learned that I've got a head gasket leak which means that according to the dealer I've got a looming $2300+ repair in the near future. I've already had to spend money replacing bad wheel bearings and a few other things that shouldn't happen pre-100k miles. (I'm at about 79k now.) I was already planning on new tires and new front brake pads and rotors in the next few months - now I can add the head gasket replacement to that. Grrr...

So, is the dealer quote way out of whack? Seems high to me.

Not terribly high, but depends on what it includes. We could diag it for you and see if ou actually need it. A bit of a hike to us but may be worth it.

So how do you know a HG is going ?

Does the car have a miss when your driving it ?

Is there a lot of white smoke behind you all the time ?

Is there coolant or oil leaking into the ground ?

Don't believe everything the Stealership tells you.

Supposedly Subaru fixed the HG problem, back about the year 2000'.

None of the above. They told me to keep an eye on fluid levels and look for any burning smell. Looking at paperwork, note says "both gaskets are leaking..oil leaking on exhaust on right side". They gave it a "yellow" on their green/yellow/red checklist.

How many miles do you put on the car in a year?

I'd be interested to know how they determined that you have a HG leak, can you provide us any additional info in why the suspect it?

100k is around the corner, might as well have the timing belt done while they are doing the HG.

More then likely its the valvecover gasket that is leaking. These cars are known for that.

It's a lot less money.

How close are yout o Mike at AZPinstalls.com, his guy's could help you and take good care of you.

That sounds more like valve cover gaskets, which cost considerably less than headgaskets.
