99 Legacy L w/196K miles. Clutch or tranny question question.
I've got a bone stock Legacy L 2.2 w/5 speed manual with mechanical clutch release.
Recently became difficult if not impossible to put into gear. Reverse grinds but wont go in. Can't get into other gears if car is stopped. Have clutch pedal all the way to the floor. When I can finally get into 1st gear the clutch engages as soon as the pedal leaves the floor and does not disengage until the pedal is nearly half way down. Adjusted the cable so it is snug and there is VERY limited free play on the lever. Worked well for about two days then problem began again with ALOT of slop on the clutch lever.
Also noticed that clutch engages before the brakes release (safety feature to keep the car from rolling with the clutch pedal engaged?).
RE-Adjusted both cables attached to the clutch lever but this did not change anything this time.
Once I got moving again I ended up have to shift gears with out the clutch (RPM method) in order to get home.
One other thing, The shifter is VERY sloppy but did not get sloppier when all this began.
Any thoughts, advice or direction would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I can't help, but for future reference, post up in the Second Generation legacy forum. Your 99 is a 2nd gen, not a 3rd gen.
The forums are labeled incorrectly for the US market. (Worldwide markets got the 3rd gen in 99, while USA got it in 00)
