Ordering Valve Cover Gasket - need info

So I'm looking at Subaru's site and can't quite understand which parts I really need...

There's the valve cover gasket, the outer valve cover gasket, and the inner valve cover gasket. I figure the inner gasket is for the spark plugs, but I can't make heads or tails of the outer gasket vs just the gasket...

I only need the passenger side, and there isn't a single parts store in town that has the gaskets in stock, so I figured I'd order OEM.

Thanks!

Call the guy's at Fredbeans, a vendor from the vendor link up top of the forum.

your subaru shope will have them. just a gasket and plug gaskets that is it.

Sounds good. What are these "half moon" gaskets I keep reading about?

mustangendsley 11-09-2012 11:13 AM

spark plug gasket's

They fit on the back of the cams if I remember right. Into the head not the VC.

I can't post pictures here but in my thread, got some new stuff for engine R&R, I believe there is a picture showing them. They didn't come in the gasket kit, but the guy's at the dealer parts counter took care of me.

you can reuse yours if you don't break them. but if you want extras just in case they are not in the gasket kits. also, buy a tube of fujibond at the dealer

Oh I'm not taking cams out, so I guess I wont need em

Well, headed to the garage...

Ok, so I'm guessing it really is the valve cover gasket... all the oil return lines look good and dry. What do you think?

yup leaky valve cover gasket. Atleast it isn't too horrible to replace. Tight but not a nightmare.

Mine has been leaking for a while, just started dripping onto the exhaust this morning, as I smelled oil burning a minute after startup. I have the Outer & Inner Gaskets, but need the half-moons pieces as well. I'll be doing this in my driveway on Sunday. Woohoo! (assuming I can get those Half-moon gaskets - anyone have part #'s??)

Adoniram 11-16-2012 07:22 AM

wait, outer AND inner? I thought there was just the valve cover gasket, and the 2 half moons...

ripemeat 11-16-2012 07:48 AM

the spark plug hole has a gasket in the valve cover

Adoniram 11-16-2012 08:05 AM

Yeah, I thought those were the "half moons"
